An updated radiocarbon date list for the upper and middle slope of Santos Basin (Southwest Atlantic)
The southwestern Atlantic margin plays a crucial role in understanding ocean circulation, with the Brazil Current (BC) driving surface flow and various water masses (TW, SACW, AAIW, UCDW, NADW, LCDW) influencing different depths. The Santos Basin, a marginal basin formed following the breakup of Gondwana, remains understudied with respect to late Quaternary sedimentary processes, and the recent literature offers conflicting interpretations of sed…
Late Holocene rainfall dynamics in southeastern Brazil linked to monsoon variability
A sediment core high-resolution multiproxy analysis (Grain size, bulk-δ13C, and n-alkanes) from Mamanguá Ria, southeastern Brazil, reveals centennial-scale hydroclimatic variability over the past ~2628 years. Located within the core of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), this ria environment offers a sensitive archive of monsoon-driven environmental change. Our proxies registered a transition at ~1400 cal BP, indicating a shift toward inc…
Late-Holocene paleoreconstruction of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean
A multiproxy evaluation focusing on sedimentological, molecular, and isotopic proxies was used to reconstruct the environmental changes on the SW Atlantic Ocean margin enabling an integrated assessment of this basin’s Late-Holocene oceanographic and climatic dynamics. Variations in paleoproductivity, climate, and sea surface temperature (SST) indicate three phases throughout the core. The first phase (2800–1600 cal yr BP) showed a generally low m…
Sedimentological and geochemical proxies reveal changes in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone in Southeast South America during the Late-Holocene
Today, the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), a convective band that extends across central Brazil to the western South Atlantic Ocean, modulates Southern Hemisphere summer rainfall in Southeastern Brazil. During the Holocene, however, the role of the SACZ over the rainfall regime in this part of South America is still under debate. This study aims to provide new insights into the SACZ Late-Holocene variability through analysis of the geoche…
Mid- to late-Holocene analysis of the influence of the La Plata River plume on the southwestern Atlantic shelf
A combined analysis of sedimentological, molecular, and microfossil proxies was used to determine paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic variations and assess sediment transport pathways along the last c.a. 6300 years in a sedimentary record collected on the inner shelf of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The combined use of terrestrial and marine proxies enables a more complete environmental perspective of the La Plata River plume influence on the …
The Valo Grande Channel in the Cananéia-Iguape Estuary-Lagoon Complex (Sp, Brazil)
The channel of the Valo Grande (VG) in the Ribeira de Iguape River (São Paulo State, Brazil), inaugurated in 1852, is one of the largest environmental disasters in the Brazilian coast. This article presents a synthesis of the historical, ecological, geographic and sociopolitical dimensions involving the VG. The VG has promoted the ecosystem disrupting and the landscape reconfiguration of Cananéia-Iguape estuary-lagoon complex. Studies have also i…
Using a cesium-137 ( 137 Cs) sedimentary fallout record in the South Atlantic Ocean as a supporting tool for defining the Anthropocene
Mollusks as indicators of historical changes in an estuarine-lagoonal system (Cananéia-Iguape, SE Brazil)
Mollusks recovered from three cores taken from the Cananéia-Iguape estuarine-lagoonal system (São Paulo State, Brazil) were studied. The sampled sediments cover a period beginning approximately two centuries ago and end at the present, including a period when the system suffered significant changes of anthropogenic origin – that is, the construction of an artificial channel connecting the lagoon with a nearby river and with the resulting input of…
Mid- to late-Holocene paleoceanographic changes on the southeastern Brazilian shelf based on grain size records
High-resolution grain size analyses of three AMS 14 C-dated cores from the Southeastern Brazilian shelf provide a detailed record of mid- to late-Holocene environmental changes in the Southwestern Atlantic Margin. The cores exhibit millennial variability that we associate with the previously described southward shift of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) average latitudinal position over the South American continent during the Holocene cli…
