  • ERPs as ‘technologies‐in‐practice’

Open Access•Kristine Dery, Richard W Hall et al.•ARTICLE•New Technology Work and Employment•2006•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 19

Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs) often fail to deliver the organisational benefits anticipated. This paper uses Orlikowski's ‘technology‐in‐practice’ framework to analyse the impact of an ERP on branch managers in a large bank. While this framework provides important insights into the impact of ERPs, the case also highlights the significance of organisational factors in shaping how users enact technology at work

  • The false promise of technological determinism

Open Access•David Grant, Richard W Hall et al.•ARTICLE•New Technology Work and Employment•2006•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 24

According to software vendors and consultants, Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs) transform the nature, structure and management of work regardless of organisational context. This paper contests this technologically deterministic view of organisational change by demonstrating the role that discourse plays in the social construction of ERPs

  • More Queensland Exceptionalism

    Open Access•Richard W Hall, Richard Hall•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•1998

Public sector change across Western economies produces broadly similar results for the state and for public employment relations. Yet local variations can matter, as governments choose how vigorously to pursue downsizing, constructing and decentralisation. As an example of such regional differences, this paper examines the form of public sector change introduced in Queensland under Labor and Coalition governments, and the implications of union st…

  • Labour movements and welfare states

Open Access•Paul Boreham, Richard W Hall et al.•ARTICLE•The Australian and New Zealand…•1996

While it is commonly accepted that the organisation and mobilisation of labour movements has been critical to the development and nature of welfare states across the OECD, considerable uncertainty remains as to the specific mechan isms and means by which labour movements secure social wage benefits. Emphasis in the evaluation of labour politics can be placed on the role of left and labour party control over government, on the effect of union move…

  • Trade Unions—Enterprise Bargaining and Control at Work Evidence From The First Wave of Enterprise Agreements

    Open Access•Paul Boreham, Richard W Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Policy and Society•1996•Referencias: 5

Since the articulation of the Enterprise Bargaining principle by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission in 1991, and the reforms to the Industrial Relations Act passed in 1994, the pace of industrial relations deregulation in Australia has quickened considerably. This paper explores some of the characteristics of the first wave of enterprise bargains with particular reference to the role of trade unions in mediating the enterprise bargain…

  • Labour and Citizenship

    Open Access•Paul Boreham, Richard W Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Policy•1996•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 31

This paper is concerned with the political determinants of the significantly different rates of welfare expenditure which characterise advanced capitalist countries. The research concentrates on the connections between the organization and mobilization of a key political actor pursing social wage benefits – the labour movement – and different levels across nations of welfare provision, including expenditure on health, social security consumption …

  • Two Paths to Prosperity

    Open Access•Paul Boreham, Richard W Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•1996•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

The shift of an industrial relations system from the centralised settlement of pay and work conditions to the encouragement of enterprise-level bargaining presents industrial relations actors with the opportunity to influence the organisation of work in one of two ways. Drawing on a range of theories of work organisation and production we contrast profitability enhancement strategies and productivity enhancement strategies. The recent dramatic sh…

  • Ann and Abby

    Richard W Hall•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1971

This article suggests that the syndicated columns published under the by-lines Dear Abby and Ann Landers contain useful textual material for intermediate and advanced ESL students. The following characteristics seem valuable: 1) the columns offer sharp insights into implicit American cultural values; 2 they are modeled on the spoken, rather than written language; 3) they stimulate classroom discussion
