Strictness and Congregational Growth in Middletown
The relative effectiveness of strictness theory and modernization theory in explaining congregational growth is tested using a random sample of white, Protestant churches in Middletown (N = 98). Although the former theory predicts that growth is positively related to an authoritative structure and to enforcing rules of ascetic strictness, modernization theory predicts the opposite pattern. For our sample, authoritative leadership seemed not to pr…

Iannaccone (1994) proposed that church success results from controlling the free-rider problem and that churches with few free-riders are more likely to provide collective rewards. Using a sample of Middletown residents (N = 567), we tested hypotheses derived from Iannaccone's theory. Our critical variable was respondents estimates of the number of free-riders in their churches We found some evidence consistent with the idea that church success i…

The Struggle over Singapore's Soul: Western Modernization and Asian Culture
Singapore is viewed as a model of an orderly, economically developing successful society on the Pacific Rim. Based on eight years of field work, the author analyzes how modernization effects an Asian society and which value conflicts prevail. The Singapore government's program to shape its version of a modern, yet Asian national identity is described in light of the dominant ideology. In addition, the values and beliefs of opposition movements ar…
The Political Impact of Traditional Family Values
Five hundred residents of the Lynds's “Middletown” (Muncie, Indiana) were randomly selected to assess the impact of traditional family values on judgments of Bill Clinton one year after his election as President. A traditional family values perspective was found to be of greater importance in evaluating President Clinton one year after his election than it was during the election. Analyses further indicated that traditional family values had a mo…

Innovation Theory and Religious Nones
Innovation theory is used in this study to understand the motivations of religious nones, or people who express no religious preference. Predictions about religious nones were derived from an analysis of data from the NORC General Social Surveys, 1973-1985. This analysis explores why some Americans have no religious preference and studies the conditions conducive to such innovation. Generally the results were as expected. Recommendations are made…

The Abortion Controversy: Conflicting Beliefs and Values in American Society
This study examines the ideological and structural bases for attitudes and political action relating to abortion. Data on abortion attitudes from a random sample of Middletown in the fall of 1989 (N = 400) indicated that the strongest effects on abortion attitude stemmed from a belief that life begins at conception, a belief in privacy rights, and religion. Social traditionalism was also found to play an important role in a pro-life stand, but it…

Personal Experience, Ideology and Support for Feminism
Previous research has come to conflicting conclusions about the relative importance of personal experience versus ideology, and within the latter about the relative significance of secular and religious beliefs and values, in creating support for feminism. This paper reports a test of the relative significance of these variables for women and for men. The study used data collected in 1988 from a random sample of the “Middletown” population (N = 4…
The Christian Right and the 1980 Presidential Election
This paper examines the role of the Christian Right in the 1980 presidential election. Throughout the campaign the media reported that this movement was a major political development, and its members would be an important source of votes for Ronald Reagan. However, interviews with residents of Middletown, who voted for the major presidential candidates in almost the same proportions as was the case nationwide, revealed that disproportionate suppo…
The Moral Majority in Middletown
The major question addressed in this paper is why people have a favorable attitude toward the moral majority. The theoretical model predicted that moral majority support would be positively related to having a Christian Right orientation, to being opposed to change, and to watching religious television; in turn, it was predicted that the latter three variables would be negatively related to modernity characteristics. Data came from a stratified, …
Pat Robertson: Who Supported His Candidacy for President
This research tested a theoretical model of specific factors leading to support for Pat Robertson's presidential candidacy, using data from a survey of Middletown residents (N = 400). We found that Robertson's followers came from those who watched the 700 Club television show, from those who were social traditionalists, from those who were political conservatives, and from those who were less well educated. However, Robertson received support onl…
Support for the Moral Majority: A Test of a Model
Two hundred and eighty-four residents of the Lynd's Middletown (Muncie, Indiana) were interviewed to test a path model of possible direct and indirect antecedents of support for the Moral Majority. The results indicated a Christian Right orientation, cultural ethnocentrism, and authoritarianism had a major impact on Moral Majority support. Respondent's education and age, and religious television had a secondary influence. Possible explanations fo…

Social Class Composition of Congregations and Pastoral Support for Liberal Activism
Christianity, Social Class, and the Catholic Bishops' Economic Policy
The recent American Catholic bishops' pastoral letter on the economy made clear that significant changes have occurred in the way Christianity views the economy. At the present time Catholic and liberal Protestant leaders are calling for basic economic changes, while some Fundamentalist leaders are actively defending capitalism. The question studied is whether these religious traditions and their spokespersons are affecting popular opinion on eco…

Conservative Government and Support for the Religious Institution: Religious Education in English Schools
During the 1980s Conservative governments instituted programs that were intended to use religion to achieve Conservative goals. An example is the reform of religious education in the English state schools undertaken by the Thatcher government. This paper reports on the expectations regarding religious education by several influential groups: Thatcherites, religious education specialists, and religious leaders. The conclusion is that the reform of…

Conservative Government and Support for the Religious Institution in Singapore: An Uneasy Alliance
During the 1980s various conservative governments tried to strengthen the public role of religion. This is understandable, given that there are affinities between political conservatism and religion. The argument developed in this paper is that when conservatives act in support of religion unforeseen problems develop that lead the conservatives to withdraw their support. The case of Singapore is considered in detail. In 1982, a conservative gover…
Economic Satisfaction vs. Moral Conservatism in the 1988 Presidential Election
Residents from “Middletown” who were going to vote in the 1988 presidential election were interviewed concerning their various economic and moral positions. The results showed that satisfaction with the economic situation in the fall of 1988 was much more important than moral conservatism in Bush's election win. An extended analysis on how economic satisfaction could influence vote was presented

A social-psychological study of religious nonbelievers
The Prediction of Religious Change
Faced with a problem, an individual can either seek a solution or increase his relatedness to the environment; the latter gives him the strength to endure his problem. A desire for increased relatedness often means a heightened interest in religion because the religious institution and the spiritual relationship offer the greatest openness to the development of new relationships. The probability of religious change, then, is a function of the deg…

A Study of Spiritual Involvement
This paper is concerned with the spiritual relationship as one form of social relationship. The first part of the paper concludes that sociologists have concentrated on religion as a belief system in a social organization and have not given consideration to religion as a spiritual relationship. The second part concerns factors that are related to the degree of spiritual involvement, and tentatively concludes that in late adolescence this involvem…

Fasting and Modernization
By examining the effect of modernization on the frequency of fasting, and the prevalence of various reasons for fasting, we attempted to gain insight into the nature of contemporary religious change. Using data from a stratified random sample of Javanese, we found that fasting was not consistently related to all indicators of modernization. However it does seem that the frequency of fasting will increase on Java, at least in the near future. Furt…
The Decline of Religious Homogeneity: The Indonesian Situation
In this paper a theory relevant to understanding the decrease in religious homogeneity is developed and tested. The theoretical model is based on Wuthnow's (1978) analysis of conditions necessary for cultural innovation, with modifications suggested by Lofland and Stark's (1965) research and studies of secularization. The data come from a stratified random sample of Javanese residents. In this context the model was used to predict the prevalance …
