Associations of Prayer, Mind-Body Therapy, and Smoking Cessation in a National Survey
Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death. Many people use mind-body therapies and/or prayer to assist them in smoking cessation, but more information on their effectiveness is needed. In the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, 5,864 persons aged 18 or older reported smoking in the prior 12 mo.; among these, users of any of 10 mind-body therapies or prayer were compared to nonusers to assess smoking cessation attempts and smoking cessa…
Disregarding (and Disrespecting?) Religion in Social Psychology
In spite of a burgeoning literature demonstrating the importance of religiousness as a determinant of a wide range of behaviors, social psychology continues to ignore this important construct. This article begins with the current spate of interest in religion in virtually the entire field of psychology, and then goes on to present a cursory history of the recent psychology of religion. Attention then turns to the most recent (4th) edition of The …

Religion and the Well‐Being of Adolescents
A literature review of the relation between religiousness and adolescent well‐being is presented, along with new analyses from a large adolescent data base. It is found that the average level of religiousness of U.S. adolescents has not declined recently, although it does appear to decrease on average across the years of adolescence. African Americans are more religious than whites, and girls are more religious than boys. Religiousness is positiv…

Reflections on 'Reflections
Howard's article linking the official Catholic position on artificial birth control to a coming overpopulation apocalypse is critiqued on two major points: (a) Countries with unusually high fertility rates have smaller Catholic populations than countries with fertility rates below the replacement level, and (b) world hunger is as or more likely to be the result of politics and distribution systems rather than overpopulation. It is suggested that …

Prevalence and Correlates of New Age Beliefs in Six Protestant Denominations
The major findings in this nationwide sample of six Protestant denominations were: (1) Endorsement of New Age beliefs such as astrology and reincarnation was infrequent (7-9%). In contrast, attitudinal statements supportive of New Age ideologies were endorsed by nearly a third of the respondents. (2) Southern Baptists were particularly low in their endorsement of these beliefs and attitudes; no denomination was particularly high. (3) These belief…

Disregarding Theology in the Psychology of Religion
Psychologists examining the effects of religiosity on other beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors have at times suffered from a lack of sophistication concerning the very real impact of differences in theology among various groups in the United States. Specific examples of this lack of sophistication are discussed. Recent findings concerning fundamentalism are then considered as examples of a more sophisticated approach. Lastly, a number of methodolo…
Ten-Year Trends in At-Risk Behaviors
This study investigated at-risk behaviors among Black and White adolescents using data from a nationally representative sample of United States high school seniors that permits examination of cohort, gender, and race effects. Designed both to describe trends in at-risk behaviors and to examine the strength and stability of a 10-variable regression model, this study found that (a) Black high school seniors reportedfewer at-risk behaviors than did …

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Religiousness
In the fifteen years since the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion devoted an entire issue to intrinsic (I) and extrinsic (E) religiousness, more than seventy published research studies have used these measures to address the relations between religion, personality, and behavior. I and E have been used both as individual, unipolar measures, and jointly in the fourfold typology originally proposed by Allport and Ross (1967) and refined by…
