Remembering the Alamo: Memory, Modernity, and the Master Symbol
"Remember the Alamo!" reverberates through Texas history and culture, but what exactly are we remembering? Over nearly two centuries, the Mexican victory over an outnumbered band of Alamo defenders has been transformed into an American victory for the love of liberty. Why did the historical battle of 1836 undergo this metamorphosis in memory and mythology to become such a potent master symbol in Texan and American culture? In this probing book, R…
Materializing Democracy: Toward a Revitalized Cultural Politics
For the most part, democracy is simply presumed to exist in the United States. It is viewed as a completed project rather than as a goal to be achieved. Fifteen leading scholars challenge that stasis in Materializing Democracy . They aim to reinvigorate the idea of democracy by placing it in the midst of a contentious political and cultural fray, which, the volume's editors argue, is exactly where it belongs. Drawing on literary criticism, cultur…

"Los Pastores" and the gifting of performance
This study of Los Pastores, a folk drama performed in San Antonio, Texas, argues that the struggle over the production and reproduction of culture is situated in the emergent social formation evoked through performance. As such, the interrelationship between gifting and labor constitutes a communicative dialectic upon which an analysis of expressive culture, one based on performance as production, is centered. [performance, cultural production, g…
History,'Los Pastores', and the Shifting Poetics of Dislocation
The history of 'Los Pastores' in Texas, a nativity play from medieval Spain used by the early missionaries to teach Christian doctrine, is embedded in the larger social arena of political change and social subordination of mexicanos in this region. Any effort to understand the historical practice and contemporary meaning of Los Pastores cannot be separated from the way both performers and event have been narratively inscribed through various sele…

The Corrido and the Emergence of Texas-Mexican Social Identity
