  • Black Marxism , Racial Capitalism, and Greek and Balkan Coloniality Studies: Toward an Abolitionist Perspective

    Open Access•Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2025•References: 35

The end of the Cold War marked the beginning of the Balkan and Greek postcolonial and de-colonial studies. The Yugoslav ethnic wars, the Greek 'financial crisis,' and the European migration crisis generated a body of critical studies on regional nationalism, coloniality, and racialism and the Balkans and Greece's ambiguous relation to Europe. Cedric J. Robinson's Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition was missing from the large …

  • Abolition of a National Paradigm: The Case Against Benedict Anderson and Maria Todorova’s Raceless Imaginaries

    Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•Interventions•2022

The “geography” of the Balkans is “prisoner” to a double discursive “incarceration”: externally, within the field of balkanism and internally, within the national paradigm. “Geography” is a symbolically inscribed region, and the Balkans’ historical legacy defines the region as a specific “geography,” however national paradigm defines historical legacy. If the national paradigm were abolished, this would rupture the chain of top-down signification…

  • Cedric J. Robinson, Black radicalism and the abolition of Europe

    Open Access•Dušan Bjelić, Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

A militant critique of ‘Europe’ as the civilisation of racialism singles out the work of Cedric J. Robinson from other critical scholarship on Europe. Even though his concept of ‘racial capitalism’ is increasingly cited, on the whole, Robinson’s works are largely unknown in European studies. Perhaps they are too threatening to Europe’s self-centred and self-embellishing narratives on racism, which would explain European studies scholars’ silent t…

  • Toward a Genealogy of the Balkan Discourses on Race

    Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•Interventions•2018

The ongoing racist reception of immigrants by post-communist states previously known to be class conscious, internationalist, and egalitarian naturally raises the question: how is racism possible in societies with no colonial or interracial experience? It is fair to state that the critical discourse on race barely exists and is historically and theoretically alien to postsocialist historiography on the grounds that Eastern Europe and the Balkans …

  • Bulgaria's Zionism, The Colonization of Palestine and The Question of Balkan Postcoloniality

    Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•Interventions•2017

The foreclosure of the Balkans’ postcoloniality is a fragment of a much larger strategic manoeuvring inside a European historiography ruled by the national paradigm aimed at disowning colonial history. Because the European Union is a new political entity without a previous history, and because it has formally denounced colonialism and anti-Semitism, there is a creeping assumption that it somehow deserves a clean slate and the right to shift the o…

  • The Balkans: Radical Conservatism and Desire

    Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2009

This essay focuses on Balkan discourse geography as a hidden contingency of the intellectual work of Slavoj Žižek and Julia Kristeva. It takes into account the extent to which their self-proclaimed cosmopolitanism and universalism reflect disidentification with their Balkan origins. This disidentification alerts one to the unacknowledged centrality of Kristeva's and Žižek's Balkan origins to their writing about the region, and it also points to t…

  • Julia Kristeva: Exile and Geopolitics of the Balkans

    Open Access•Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2008•References: 5

Julia Kristeva, taking a psychoanalytic approach to the question of exile and exilic identity inStrangers to Ourselvesand other works, makes a distinctive contribution to the field of exile studies. She constructs the Balkans as geopolitical analog to the psychoanalytic concept of "archaic mother," the unconscious source of carnage and violence. She proposes "Oedipal revolt" as a kind of national psychotherapy to connect individual Balkan subject…

  • Frenching the 'Real' and Praxeological Therapy: An Ethnomethodological Clarification of the New French Theory of Media

    Open Access•Dušan I Bjelić•ARTICLE•Czech Sociological Review•2006•References: 6

The new post-modern theory of mass media as elaborated by Jean Baudrillard makes the provocative claim that the media representation of social reality is the very mode of its disappearance. In this essay, using Baudrillard's theory, the author analyses the production of news on the war in Bosnia by American TV networks and argues for a local rather than global representation of social reality. While the edited words and images on the television s…

    Open Access•Dušan Bjelić, Dušan I Bjelić et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This Comment takes its point of departure from Myles Jackson's historical study of Goethe's attempt to incite a `protestant reformation' in colour theory. According to Jackson, Goethe tried to unseat the remote authority of Newton's science in favour of a science grounded in non-specialized personal knowledge. Goethe's natural-philosophical texts, as we shall demonstrate, involve readers in a firsthand engagement with the actual experimental mate…

This article offers an ethnomethodological analysis of suicide practices in situ. By analyzing a videotaped record of a public suicide by a government official this article is able to examine the temporal relations between the unfolding suicide act and the situational contingencies arising from its interactional context. In the case examined, the suicide was planned as a ceremony, in part to indicate the official facing corruption charges. A pres…
