  • The Consequences of School Environment and Locus of Control on Adulthood Deviant Behavior

    Heili Pals, Tony P Love et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 58

We examine the long-term effect of school environment on individual deviant behavior. Specifically, we contrast the effects of school deviance and students' perception of school deviance on personal deviance later in life. Using longitudinal data from four waves of more than 3,100 participants in the Kaplan Longitudinal and Multigenerational Study, we are able to show that school deviance in 7th grade has only a short-term effect on individual de…

  • Age at Menarche and Choice of College Major: Implications for STEM Majors

    Open Access•Anna Brenner-Shuman, Warren Waren•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Science Technology &…•2013

Even though boys and girls in childhood perform similarly in math and spatial thinking, after puberty fewer young women pursue majors that emphasize abilities such as science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in college. If postpubertal feminization contributes to a lower likelihood of choosing STEM majors, then young women who enter puberty early should be the least likely to pursue those majors later in their education. In this study, w…

  • Houston's Emerging Exposure between African Americans and Whites: Evidence of Spatial Assimilation or Place Stratification

    Open Access•Warren Waren•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The persistent finding of a racial gap in residential attainment between African Americans and whites has led to a critique, which argues that spatial assimilation theory does not explain the residential segregation of African Americans, even though it explains segregation for other groups. That critique is typically based on analyses of cross‐sectional data, which do not take into account demographic context. In this paper, I examine demographic…

  • Overlooked Implications of Ethnic Preferences for Residential Segregation in Agent-based Models

    Open Access•Mark Fossett, Warren Waren•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2005•Cited by: 15•References: 10

We investigate the impact of preferences for co-ethnic contact on residential segregation and find support for the Schelling hypothesis that modest preferences can have significant consequences for segregation under certain conditions. Our findings temper and in some instances contradict Laurie and Jaggi's claim that expanding 'vision', the size of the immediate neighbourhood households consider when evaluating residential ethnic mix, makes stabl…
