A quiet influence shaping lines of inquiry: Rethinking 'cities in pursuit of economic growth
Fatores determinantes do desempenho educacional no Sudeste Brasileiro
Rights in places: An analytical extension of the right to the city
Placing Lefebvre: Placing Lefebvre
Geographers have extensively used Lefebvre's concept of space as a social product as a framework guiding urban and political critique. Lefebvre articulates social space through a primarily ontological engagement: he describes a complex and multi-faceted object that exists in three simultaneous but distinct, co-producing registers. The famous “triad” has become canonical within Anglophone geography, but the implications of this ontology for knowin…
Heterogeneity in Residential Yard Care: Evidence from Boston, Miami, and Phoenix
Transnational Tense: Immigration and Inequality in American Housing Markets
Spatial assimilation theory, the traditional framework for analysing urban immigration and housing, was deeply shaped by the historical–geographic contingencies of American urbanism in the 1950s and 1960s. Yet the most recent and forceful challenge to assimilationist research—transnational urbanism—is also influenced by distinctive contemporary circumstances and epistemological priorities, creating a tense and unproductive dichotomy. We contend t…
Whitewash: White privilege and racialized landscapes at the University of Georgia
This paper examines racialized landscapes at the University of Georgia to better understand the ways that whiteness-or more specifically white privilege-is positioned in and uses landscapes. Given a history of segregation, violently contested desegregation, and a contemporary student body that is disproportionately white (compared to the population of the entire state of Georgia), we investigate the meanings and contradictions of the University's…

New State Spaces: Urban Governance and the Rescaling of Statehood. By Neil Brenner
Charter Schools and Urban Regimes in Neoliberal Context: Making Workers and New Spaces in Metropolitan Atlanta
In this article, we demonstrate the neoliberalism and multiscalar economic perspective of the charter school movement in Atlanta, Georgia, through examination of news articles and editorials about charter schools in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from 1998 to 2004. We posit three interrelated dynamics which explain the editorial board's interest in charter schools as part of a broader urban regime agenda. First, charter schools represent part o…
Organizing Diversity: Scales of Demographic Change and Neighborhood Organizing in St Paul, MN
Neighborhood involvement in urban governance remains a pressing goal in an era of globalization. Cities have instituted a variety of structures to facilitate this involvement, including quasi-formal neighborhood or district councils. At the same time, urban populations are changing rapidly because of multiple dynamics operating at multiple scales. Immigration, for example, continues to transform inner-city neighborhoods despite the emergence of s…
Reconstructing Urban Politics: Neighborhood Activism in Land-Use Change
In urban governance, some responsibility for services and planning may lie with private entities. Residents challenging public policies may find recourse not from elected officials but from quasi-public agencies. This article examines contestation over a hospital expansion plan in Athens, Georgia. Using archival accounts and interviews, the author investigates the responses of the local state and the hospital to neighborhood-based activism and th…
Constructing Place: Cultural Hegemonies and Media Images of an Inner-City Neighborhood
This paper examines place portrayals of an inner-city neighborhood by investigating the interrelationships among the representations of the neighborhood in major mainstream newspapers, the alternative neighborhood press, and local institutions. I argue that the everyday, lived experiences of neighborhood residents are represented through a series of discourses and counter-discourses between the mainstream and local newspapers. Using newspaper art…
