Settlement Discontinuities in Southwestern Arabia during the Middle and Late Holocene
Recent research has produced an increasingly nuanced but still incomplete understanding of Neolithic through Iron Age communities in southwestern Arabia. Present evidence indicates that foraging communities in the lowland interior of Yemen adopted animal herding during the 6th millennium b.c. and irrigation farming during the 3rd millennium b.c. or possibly earlier. Survey in the Wādī Bayḥān area has identified multiple settlement discontinuities…
Regional differences in the distribution of the sub‐Saharan, West Eurasian, and South Asian mtDNA lineages in Yemen
Despite its key location for population movements out of and back into Africa, Yemen has not yet been sampled on a regional level for an investigation of sub‐Saharan, West Eurasian, and South Asian genetic contributions. In this study, we present mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data for regionally distinct Yemeni populations that reveal different distributions of mtDNA lineages. An extensive database of mtDNA sequences from North and East African, Midd…

The Amuq plain in southeast Turkey is of major importance to the development of Near Eastern cultural sequences. Recent investigations of geoarchaeology, settlement patterns, and individual sites now provide a framework for the assessment of the original work by the University of Chicago and Sir Leonard Woolley. Geoarchaeological investigations provide a dynamic context for the interpretation of settlement patterns and show that sedimentation ove…
Hammat al-Qa and the roots of urbanism in southwest Arabia
Prehistoric (Bronze Age) settlement has been little explored in the Yemen. Here, we report on new research at the small, semi-urban site of Hammat al-Qa in the Dhamar region of Yemen
Khor Ile-Sud, Qatar
During six seasons between 1976 and 1982 the Mission Archéologique Française à Qatar, directed by Jacques Tixier, investigated a number of prehistoric, protohistoric and Islamic sites across the Qatar peninsula. The pre-Islamic archaeological investigations concentrated on the area of al Khor on the north-east coast, where various members of the team excavated several sites with ‘Ubaid pottery and a number of undated cairn burials (Tixier 1980, I…

The Bronze Age of Highland Yemen
Bronze Age occupation of highland western Yemen can now be documented over the nearly two millennia between roughly 2 800 and 1 200/1 000 ВС. An Italian project in К hawlan and an American project in Dhamar have studied regional settlement pattern, architecture and intra-site arrangement, and radiocarbon-dated cultural assemblages for two highland districts about 50 km apart. Comparison of excavated pottery from five sites reveals strong regional…

The Chipped Stone Industry at Hacinebi

Transcaucasia at the End of the Early Bronze Age
Transcaucasia was the heartland of the Kura-Araxes, or Early Transcaucasian culture, which holds an important place in the culture history of eastern Anatolia. The transition from this Early Bronze Age culture to the more fragmented regional cultures of the Middle Bronze Age remains poorly defined. The transition is marked by a shift away from fairly autonomous village life, the appearance of evidence for enhanced social hierarchy, and the first …

"Dynamics of Trade in the Ancient Mesopotamian "World System
Maritime trade in the Arabian Gulf connected Mesopotamia with societies in the Gulf and with the Indus during the Bronze Age. This article explores the Gulf trade in light of shifting consumption patterns and of various political forces at work within and between regions, in order to define the socioeconomic place of the trade in center-periphery relations. Through time the consumption of certain commodities, notably copper and grain, became deep…

Tayma Painted Ware and the Hejaz Iron Age Ceramic Tradition
Tayma long ranked among the important cities of pre-Islamic Arabia, not least for its brief tenure as the royal residence of the Neo-Babylonian king Nabonidus in the mid-6th century B.C. Together with Dedan (al'Ula), Tayma formed an important staging point in the western Arabian overland trade of the 1st millennium B.C., a geographical and economic reality which goes far toward accounting for the importance of both centers to the northern partici…
