  • Religion, Well-being, and Heritage

    Open Access•Norris Lang•ARTICLE•The Oriental Anthropologist A…•2026•Referencias: 23

Religious festivals offer many dimensions of working toward well-being, including health and recognition on both the individual and collective levels. Safety measures linked to the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the possibilities for collective worship, causing devotees to adapt their ritual practices and to try to approach divine entities domestically and online. What are the implications of such adapted rituals for devotees who are working toward we…

  • Global Religious Projects with Local Reach

    Open Access•Norris Lang•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2025•Referencias: 33

Global Hinduism involves a multi-faceted relation between religion and globalization. Different approaches to the Tamil ritual practice of carrying kavadi in the French overseas department in La Réunion illustrate how global Hinduism entails both standardizing processes and locally contextualized meaning-making. The orientation toward India and Hinduism as a world religion by some Reunionese descendants of Indian indentured laborers since the 197…

  • Religion, the City, and the Body

    Open Access•Norris Lang, Natalie Lang•ARTICLE•Religion and Society•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

This article contributes to debates on the relation between religion and the city by focusing on bodily experiences of religious rituals and the urban. Approaching religion as corporeal, and acknowledging the importance of bodies in experiencing and creating cities, I focus on embodied religious practices and the role of ritual bodies in the creation of urban memory. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork on the Hindu fire-walking festival in Singapor…

  • Flying rebound

Stefan Hoffmann, Norris Lang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2023

Political measures during the COVID-19 pandemic forced consumers to cancel flights, resulting in significant decreases of their individual greenhouse gas emissions. This paper introduces the concept of imposed flying sufficiency and asks whether this could lead to a flying rebound. Imposed flying sufficiency describes that external factors, such as political measures during the pandemic, force consumers to reduce their flights. The term flying re…

  • Introduction—Asian Religions in the Covidian Age

Open Access•Emily Hertzman, Emily Zoe Hertzman et al.•CHAPTER•CoronAsur•2023

Bacteria, viruses, ghosts, holy spirits.A number of invisible entities trespass and spill from nonhuman to human, betraying the precariousness and porousness of the boundaries separating them. The Covidian age has made us more aware of and yet also skeptical about such boundaries, as zoonotic diseases jump from animal to human, from human to human, and across international borders.Relations of "pandemicity" (Richardson 2020)-the social relationshi…

  • For a 'beautiful' religion without 'buzz

    Norris Lang•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

The ways in which some Hindu women use Facebook in the French overseas department of La Reunion suggest an intrinsic relationship between religion and media, not only in the sense of religious mediation, but also as mediation between their aspirations and achievements in terms of religious knowledge, gender roles, and social status. While their Facebook interactions need to be considered in continuation with their offline aspirations, the young w…

  • Religion and the Covid-19 pandemic

    C E Lorea, Neena Mahadev et al.•ARTICLE•Religion•2022•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 35

This introduction opens a collection of seven articles which investigate how religious communities negotiate demands for physical distance induced by governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in accord with their religious and spiritual aspirations to establish presence and togetherness. Grounded in ethnography and media analysis, our contributors offer studies on Pentecostal healing, Mormon eschatology, Hindu diasporic rituals, Chinese spi…

  • Religious Creolization and Differentiation

Norris Lang, Natalie Lang•ARTICLE•Archives de sciences sociales des…•2022•Referencias: 12

Religious differentiations are as important as creolization processes in creole societies. Taking four generations of a family in La Réunion as an example, I illustrate how religious practices and identifications can develop historically, culturally and socially in a creole context. Changing importance of and identification with religious practices are interrelated with political developments and power relations, ranging from the colonial context…

  • Stigma, Self-Esteem, and Depression

    Norris G Lang, Norris Lang•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1991•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 1

AIDS creates a new source of stigma and affects the entire spectrum of a PWA's (person with AIDS) social being, both his family and peer relationships. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part combines ethnography with psychometric scales in an effort to understand the lives of gay men with different levels of personal and medical impairment from the AIDS virus. The second provides six case histories of individuals from the various ca…
