  • Life-Course Trajectories of Childless Women: Country-Specific or Universal

Open Access•Valentina Tocchioni, Anna Rybińska et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Population /…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 58

While existing research has documented complexities in biographies of childless women, few studies to date have systematically examined the life-course pathways of the childless from a comparative, cross-country perspective. In this paper, we analyse biographies of childless women in four countries—Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United States—in order to investigate whether pathways into childlessness are country-specific or commonly shared acro…

  • Transitioning to virtual interaction during the Covid‐19 pandemic: Impact on the Family Connects postpartum home visiting program activity

    Open Access•Anna Rybińska, Debra L Best et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2022•References: 28

In this paper, we analyze program activity for Family Connects (FC), an evidence‐based postpartum home‐visiting intervention, during the COVID‐19 pandemic. When the pandemic began, FC transitioned to a virtual protocol which maintains key psychosocial components of the in‐person protocol and adjusts health assessments to address the lack of in‐person contact. Program performance is contrasted for periods before the pandemic onset (April 2019–Marc…

Open Access•Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L Greil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 61

Using data from a population survey, this article explores whether perceptions of having a fertility problem among 926 U.S. couples in heterosexual relationships (women aged 25-45 and male partners) are associated with distress. Most couples did not perceive a fertility problem (58%). In almost a third (30%) of the couples, only women perceived a fertility problem; in 4%, only the men; and in nearly a fifth (19%), both perceived a problem. Adjust…

  • Childless Expectations and Childlessness Over the Life Course

    Open Access•Anna Rybińska, S Philip Morgan•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2019

Using nineteen panels of the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY-79), we construct life-lines characterizing women's childless expectations and fertility behavior. One-quarter of women in the NLSY-79 cohort ever reported an expectation for childlessness but only 14.8 percent of women remain childless. Childless women follow two predominant life course paths: (1) repeated postponement of childbearing and the subsequent adoption of a c…

  • Super Bowl Babies”: Do Counties with Super Bowl Winning Teams Experience Increases in Births Nine Months Later

    Open Access•George M Hayward, Anna Rybińska•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Following the claim of a highly publicized National Football League (NFL) commercial, we test whether the Super Bowl provides a positive exogenous shock to fertility in counties of winning teams. Using stadium locations to identify teams’ counties, we analyze the number of births in counties of both winning and losing teams for 10 recent Super Bowls. We also test for state effects and general effects of the NFL playoffs. Overall, our results show…

  • Social Sequence Analysis: Methods and Applications

    Anna Rybińska•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2017

The dynamic nature of social processes has for long been at the center of social sciences. Researchers from various fields, such as sociology, economics, psychology, and political or organizational science, all investigate the sequential and ordered social phenomena using a set of similar methods and techniques described as sequence analysis. Seeing this similarity, Benjamin Cornwell set out to amass the concepts and methods of this interdiscipli…
