A Deleuzian Life – A People to Come: An Introduction
On Expression
This brief essay reflects on the concept of expressionism in Gilles Deleuze's work on Spinoza, and addresses the relationship between forms of content and forms of expression as discussed by Deleuze and Félix Guattari when they introduce a minor literature. We address how modes of expression – expressing, expressed, expresses – can enable liberatory movements of creative resistance, and yet, how expression can be cut short thereby devolving into …
Sharing and caring: Housing in Times of Precarity
This paper explores two key themes that have enjoyed increasing attention in geography research in the last twenty years: geographies of care and experiences of precarity. It focuses on the perspectives of residents living in share houses during a strict COVID-19 lockdown in the city of Melbourne, Australia, drawing on 20 interviews conducted in mid-2020. In so doing, it contributes to understandings of care practices in 'non-traditional' househo…
Our Infrastructural Loves: Architectural Pedagogies of Care and Support
Embracing a critical pedagogy of care and support in the teaching and learning environment of the architectural design studio, this essay discusses ways in which architecture can be reimagined via infrastructural love. By exploring infrastructural support systems we seek other ways of situating architectural design amidst contemporary environmental, social, and political crises. We have undertaken this work in collaboration with architectural des…

Creative Ecologies: Theorizing the practice of architecture
Architect and philosopher Hélène Frichot examines how the discipline of architecture is theorized and practiced at the periphery. Eschewing a conventionally direct approach to architectural objects – to iconic buildings and big-name architects – she instead explores the background of architectural practice, to introduce the creative ecologies in which architecture exists only in relation to other objects and ideas. Consisting of a series of philo…
Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle Revisited: Towards Post-Human Becomings of Man
It is now well over a decade since the artist Matthew Barney's epic work the Cremaster Cycle was completed. This essay returns to the post-human becomings of man that populate Barney's elaborately cross-referenced, aesthetic pluriverse, in particular addressing how the man-form labours amidst and on his environment-worlds, inclusive of the architectural augmentations that assist in the production of such worlds. Revisiting Barney's Cremaster Cycl…

Olafur Eliasson and the Circulation of Affects and Percepts: In Conversation
Hélène Frichot's conversation with Olafur Eliasson reveals the depths to which his work mobilises atmosphere as an agent of human experience and social action, prompting a subjective transformation. Light and colour play significant parts in culling affective atmospheres open to multiple perceptions focused on the ephemeral. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
