The Work of Art in the Age of Its Digital Distribution
This paper argues that Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of its Technical Reproducibility” provides a rich analytic framework for understanding how the many dimensions of aesthetic experience interact both with each other and with social and political life more broadly. The heart of that framework is a structural theory of the relation of six core aesthetic concepts. With Benjamin’s systematic analysis in hand, the paper advances an a…
Literature in the German science of the soul
The early history of anthropology in eighteenth-century Germany wove together contributions from medicine, metaphysics, and a host of other disciplines in an attempt to develop a holistic ‘science of man.’ This paper examines a literary text written by prominent figure in that movement, Johann Gottlob Krüger’s Dreams (Träume) (1754). The collection of parables staged as dreams in this book presents specifically literary cases against the sufficie…

The Camera Obscura and the Nature of the Soul
When considering the period between Kepler's adoption of an instrument otherwise used for the purposes of courtly entertainment and enshrining of it as a kind of sigil for his new mechanistic optic
A Materialist Transcendental
Alain Badiou's 2006 Logics of Worlds presents a fascinating attempt to construct an avowedly materialist analysis of the conditions of the intelligibility of appearance. This paper sketches the outlines of the materialist transcendental developed there in order to isolate just what Badiou takes its materialist credentials to consist in. This effort leads to an examination of the analysis of mathematical formalism provided in Badiou's earlier The …
Patterns of Preference for Numerical and Verbal Probabilities
Patterns of Preference for Numerical and Verbal Probabilities
We report results of an experiment designed to test a principle formulated by Budescu and Wallsten (1995), that, when communicating uncertainty information, mode choices are sensitive to sources and degrees of vagueness. In addition, we examined subjects’ efficacy in using such uncertainty information as a function of communication mode, source, and vagueness. In phase one of the experiment, subjects in a dyad used precise (numerical) or imprecis…
