The Key Debates series was launched in 2010 with the aim of revisiting "the central issues that continue to animate thinking about film and audiovisual media," which we have now done across ten volumes. All of these have followed a pattern of reexamining foundational texts and issues, while also investigating new lines of transmission and interpretation. Our book series' dual interest in foundations and novel lines of inquiry is demonstrated by the…
Cosmopolitan Global Politics
Climate science, the politics of climate change and futures of IR
This article considers what is necessary politically to respond to the empirical challenge of climate change and to the present calls of climate science (a carbon-neutral world by 2050). Its basic argument is that, among an array of national and international actors, it remains the state that can drive a successful politics of climate change. Without the heavy-lifting of the state and the state's ability as a national entity to motivate behaviour…
The nuclear condition in the twenty-first century
This Introduction presents the seven closely interlinked papers that explore the theme of this Special Issue, and one of the enduring existential questions for International Relations: the nuclear condition in the twenty-first century. The Special Issue is the second to come from two workshops sponsored by a UK Leverhulme grant, and it builds upon the first, more theoretical Special Issue, which brought Classical Realist and Critical Theory texts…
Our political moment
National interest and national security need to be reconfigured so as to accommodate a state's response to global threats and challenges. This requires in turn addressing the following paradox: the pooling and ceding of sovereignty must be made in the very name of national sovereignty. The article maintains that it is one of the foremost challenges of political responsibility and political leadership today to assume this paradox and thereby align…
Towards a critical concept of the statesperson
This article considers convergence between classical realism and critical theory in relation to pressing political problems. It argues that the spirit of both traditions can help develop critical reflection on the state as an agent of change. I suggest that too much recent critical theorization has avoided the state in its attention to social movements, but that a critical concept of state leadership is now required to address global threats and …
From Moral to Political Responsibility in a Globalized Age
Responsibility for the provision of global public goods is generally couched in moral terms: terms that, to one side of the important moral argument, signal the deficit of global collective action despite recent engagements in the normative concept of “sovereignty as responsibility.” In this context the article seeks greater emphasis, in morally informed reflection on world politics, on political responsibility . The argument is made in two steps…
Response to Chris Brown's Review of Cosmopolitanism and International Relations Theory
Practical Judgement in International Political Theory
Political Vision in the Discipline of International Relations
International Relations theory does not distinguish enough between prediction and vision, and, as a result, retreats unduly from practice. This article argues for the importance of political vision in the study of international relations by complicating the standard social science distinction between fact and value. Using Nietzschean genealogy, it argues for a dual relationship between the normative and the empirical: the deduction of norms from …
Culture and the Specificity of Politics
Technology and Politics
This paper considers Bernard Stiegler's contribution to contemporary critical theory. Stiegler's singular understanding of technology widens critical debate on the specificity of contemporary society and prolongs, in a novel manner, remaining commitments of recent French philosophy to the Marxist analysis of capitalism, underpinned by Freudian libidinal economy. I argue that the originality of Stiegler's work lies in his understanding of retentio…
Arendt and the Critique of Moralism
Cosmopolitanism and Realism
On both theoretical and analytic accounts, cosmopolitanism and realism seem destined to bypass each other, one entering, at best, the normative dimension of social science, the other, stressing its positive dimension. In this article, I want to suggest that this opposition needs to be unsettled for future theorization and (perhaps) practice of world politics. Taking these two schools of thought is exemplary since their respective theoretical moda…
Cosmopolitanism and Europe
Tragedy, World Politics and Ethical Community
This article returns to recent debate in this journal on the pertinence or impertinence of tragedy to international relations theory and world politics. Following post-Kantian methodology, it argues that tragic insight points up the immanence of ethics to politics, cutting across distinctions between the normative and the positive, the idealist and the realist, that are particular to the field of international relations. In distinction to Lebow's…
In Memorium Jacques Derrida
In Memorium Jacques Derrida: The Power of Reason Richard Beardsworth (bio) Preface We live in a political age, that is, an age in which the political shape into which the economy and society are to be fashioned is uncertain. We live in an age of the world, that is, an age in which, for the first time in history, most activity is related to the world as a whole, whether it be an action for the world, a reaction against it or an act lying between e…
The Future of Critical Philosophy and World Politics
This paper considers the legacy of Derrida's thought in the context of the future challenge of contemporary politics: the construction of world polity. It rehearses, first, the steps of the recent `reconciliation' between Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida, and suggests, from out of the terms of this reconciliation, that the deconstruction of reason has been caught out by the contemporary movements of irrationalism. It then deepens this historic…
