  • The Way Poets Read Now

    Open Access•Elizabeth Sarah Coles•ARTICLE•Humanities•2025

The way literature scholars read now has been under scrutiny for over a decade. The same long decade has seen an explosion in experimental literatures that make reading in the literary-critical sense a matter for poets: a poet’s hybrid, whose disturbance of genre is claimed by publishers as the writing’s main attraction. This paper explores the disturbance of literary criticism in the work of contemporary North American poets, Maureen N. McLane a…

  • Thérèse mon amour: Julia Kristeva’s St. Teresa of Avila

    Open Access•Elizabeth Sarah Coles, Elizabeth Coles•ARTICLE•Feminist Theology•2016

This essay reads Julia Kristeva’s ‘novel-essay’ on St. Teresa of Avila, Thérèse mon amour (2008b), as a form of relationship to literature we can also see suggested, though not theorized, in Kristeva’s critical thought. Thérèse mon amour performs feats of interpretation and intimacy with St. Teresa’s writing that rehearse key tenets of her theology, but that also revive and re-open questions at the heart of Kristeva’s theoretical matrix, question…

  • Cutting off Mediation. Agamben as Master Thinker

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky, Catharine Diehl et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Poética•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Agamben’s Homo Sacer turns centrally upon “bare life”. However, the following subjects are not thematized: natality, gender, sexuality, the relation of the sexes, the heterosexual character of the symbolic order and political culture, the interest of women in the reproduction of life. The entire question of sexual difference —like that of the difference between victim and perpetrator, between witnesses and those born afterwards— is banned from Ag…

  • Psychoanalysis and the Poem: On Reading in Sándor Ferenczi and D. W. Winnicott

Elizabeth Sarah Coles, Elizabeth Coles•ARTICLE•New Formations•2014

This article examines how returning to the question of interpretation in twentieth-century psychoanalysis can help us readdress the discipline’s bearing on literary studies, in particular the study of poetry. Reading the work of Sándor Ferenczi and D.W. Winnicott, the article sets out their responses to well-documented controversies surrounding psychoanalytic interpretation. Using original research on the correspondence of both analysts and key r…

  • The Sacred Object: Anne Carson and Simone Weil

    Open Access•Elizabeth Sarah Coles, Elizabeth Coles•ARTICLE•Acta Poética•2013
