  • Euthanasia of Freedom and Sexual Conatus

    Open Access•A Kiarina Kordela•ARTICLE•Filozofski vestnik•2026

One of the tours de force in Joan Copjec’s Read My Desire concerns the correlation between the Lacanian formulas of sexuation and the Kantian antinomies of reason. This paper traces the modern itinerary of freedom, from the dynamic antinomy (male side) and Kant’s free public world Scholar of the Enlightenment, through Marx’s democratic State as the locus of transcendent freedom, to Copjec’s sex qua real, i.e., as a freedom that emerges out of the…

  • Resistance and Biopower: Shame, Cynicism, and Struggle in the Era of Neoliberalism and the Alt-Right

    Open Access•A Kiarina Kordela•ARTICLE•Postmodern Culture•2021

This essay examines the relation between neoliberalism and the alt-right, showing that their shared cynical amoralism elevates irresponsibility to the level of absolute morality, such that the Democrats’ exhortation to shame proves counterproductive. The alt-right’s outrage-inducing effect on the Democrats is due to its double relation to biopower: insofar as biopower governs the society of shameless jouissance , the alt-right conforms to the bio…

  • Spinoza's Authority Vol. 1: Resistance and Power

Dimitris Vardoulakis, A Kiarina Kordela et al.•BOOK•Spinoza's Authority Vol. 1•2017

Spinoza's political thought has been subject to a significant revival of interest in recent years. As a response to difficult times, students and scholars have returned to this founding figure of modern philosophy as a means to help reinterpret and rethink the political present. Spinoza's Authority Volume I: Resistance and Power in Ethics makes a significant contribution to this ongoing reception and utilization of Spinoza's political thought by …

  • Materialist Epistemontology: Sohn-Rethel with Marx and Spinoza

    Open Access•A Kiarina Kordela•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2016•References: 2

Sohn-Rethel’s theory undermines the line of thought that, from Kant to deconstruction, severs being or the thing from representation, by showing that the Kantian a priori categories of thought (representation) are a posteriori effects of the relations of things (being), to the point that it is ‘only through the language of commodities that their owners become rational beings’. This is the thesis of Marx’s theory of ‘commodity fetishism’, and Sohn…

  • Biopolitics: From Tribes to Commodity Fetishism

    A Kiarina Kordela•ARTICLE•differences•2013•References: 3

This essay advances a new theory of biopolitics by first showing that the shortcomings of both Michel Foucault's and Giorgio Agamben's theories are due to the fact that they do not approach biopolitics as both a historically specific and a transhistorical phenomenon. Based on a synthetic reading of Karl Marx's analysis of capital, labor-power, and commodity fetishism; Spinozian monism; Lacanian psychoanalysis; Claude Lévi-Strauss's analysis of th…

  • Being or Sex, and Differences

    A Kiarina Kordela•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2012

This essay focuses on three differences, on the basis of which it eventually revises current conceptions of biopolitics. First, there is the difference between sex and sexual difference. Sex pertains to virtual time and is another term for the death drive or Being (or substance, in the Spinozian sense), as the power of its self-actualization, because of which Sex or Being is self-referential; by contrast, sexual difference introduces (actual) tim…

Open Access•A Kiarina Kordela, Dimitris Vardoulakis•BOOK•Freedom and Confinement in…•2011

  • Capital: At Least It Kills Time

    Open Access•A Kiarina Kordela•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The theory of temporality and historicity in question is based on two fundamental theses. First, in secular capitalism, semantic (language) and economic systems, and subjectivity—since the speaking subject is the subject of the signifier—are homologous systems of value. Second, time and social reality relate to one another in terms of Spinozist immanent causality, in which the cause (a priori time) is an effect of its own effects (empirical reali…

In truth, however, value is here the active factor in a process, in which, while constantly assuming the form in turn of money and commodities, it at the same time changes in magnitude, differentiates itself by throwing off surplus-value from itself; the original value, in other words, expands spontaneously. For the movement... is its own movement... is automatic expansion... able to add value to itself... living off-springs...golden eggs...an in…
