Our attempts to gain knowledge from studying the effects of a single windstorm might be complicated by one or more other events that pass through the same system before it recovers from prior damage. In this article, we had the opportunity to examine permanent plots affected by two consecutive catastrophic storms of comparable intensity within a short time frame (less than a decade). Contemporary land systems science is described, and its relationships to land‐use and land‐cover change, and land change science explained. The importance of land systems sciences in contemporary local‐ to global‐scale environmental and societal issues is outlined, its interdisciplinary nature considered, and its position within geography explained.

Human and climatic impact on late Quaternary deposition in the Sparta Basin Piedmont
The evolution of four alluvial fans in the Evrotas Valley, southern Greece, was examined using a combination of geomorphological and sedimentological techniques. Source material for the fans is derived largely from the Taygetos Mountains, and thus the fan deposits provide proxy evidence for erosion of upland landscapes. Stratigraphic sequences exposed in the fanhead trenches suggest a progressive change in depositional style down‐fan. Within the …
Merged remotely sensed data for geomorphological investigations in deserts
Image merging has gained acceptance in geological remote sensing, however it has rarely been applied in geomorphology. We report on the usefulness of principal components substitution (PCS) to merge IRS panchromatic data with multispectral Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, to map commonly encountered desert geomorphological features, and in relative age dating of alluvial surfaces.
