Mobility situations in Mexico City Metropolitan Zone: An exploration of time and distance in the journey to work through machine learning
This study examines the determinants of commuting time and distance using the mobility situations framework in the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone (MCMZ), a megacity marked by spatial mismatch, socioeconomic segregation, and fragmented transport infrastructure. Using data from the 2017 Origin-Destination Survey, we classify 192 travel districts into four mobility situations—Short Commutes, Long Commutes, Travelscarps, and Wormholes—based on average…
The journey to work as observed accessibility: Job access within employment subcenters in greater Mexico City
This study advances observed accessibility as a complement to traditional potential accessibility approaches, showing that access to jobs is shaped by employment subcenter-specific mechanisms that mediate who can obtain jobs in those locations. It examines the determinants of functional linkages between workers' places of residence and the three main employment subcenters in the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone: the Central Agglomeration, Santa Fe, …

Diverging mobility situations in Greater Mexico City: Exploring the factors behind the mobility situations of public transport commuters
This article investigates the factors behind the likelihood of experiencing a specific type of mobility situation. The case of commuting by public transport in Greater Mexico City is analysed. A one-way ANOVA with post-hoc procedures and three multinomial logistic regression models are used to assess the extent to which transport-, land use- or socio-economic-related variables influence the likelihood of experiencing a specific mobility situation…
Diverging Mobility Situations: Measuring Relative Job Accessibility and Differing Socioeconomic Conditions in New York City
Recent accessibility research suggests that the relationship between time and distance in the journey to work can produce diverging mobility situations. That is, areas farther away from employment can sometimes have faster commutes than areas closer, and vice versa. This article seeks to advance such research by exploring who is likely to experience which mobility situation. With data from the Census Transportation Planning Products 2012–2016, we…
Fast-track institutionalization: The opening of urban planning best practice agencies in Mexico City
The article explores the related concepts of best practice agencies (BPAs) and fast-track institutionalization. We define BPAs as agencies that have been inspired by international trends in urban governance, often opened within local urban contexts to implement urban planning best practice policies and programs. Importantly, we argue that BPAs often go through processes of “fast-track institutionalization”, meaning that in an attempt by mayors to…
Showcase politics: The production and distribution of new public space in Mexico City
This paper analyzes the work of the Public Space Authority (AEP) in Mexico City to explore the politics of site selection in public space infrastructure investment. By focusing on a pocket parks program as a case study, we explore how governments and agencies make efforts to configure their distributional criteria for urban public goods. We develop an explanatory framework around showcase politics, where agencies favor high-profile locations to c…
