  • Śaiva Tantra

Dominic Goodall•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Tantric Studies•2023

This chapter focuses on “tantrism” in the first millennium of the common era, the formative period, in which the school of doctrine and liturgy known as the Śaivasiddhānta emerged. One of the earliest surviving scriptures that can be regarded as a Śaiva tantra is the Niśvāsatattvasaṃhitā. The Niśvāsa uses the term Mantramārga, “the path of mantras,” which various authors hold to be a possible candidate for an emic equivalent of the term tantrism.…

  • Sectarian Rivalry in Ninth-Century Cambodia

    Open Access•Dominic Goodall, Chhunteng Hun•ARTICLE•Medieval Worlds•2021

This article provides an edition and translation of an inscribed two-sided stela (K. 1457), discovered during the construction of a road in the northwest of Cambodia in 2019, that commemorates the endowment of a Viá1£á1 u temple during the reign of the ninth-century king Jayavarman III. The inscription, in Sanskrit verse except for a few lines in Khmer prose that give details of the grants made, is undated, but uses the posthumous name of Jayavar…

  • Śaivism and the Tantric Traditions

Dominic Goodall, Shaman Hatley et al.•BOOK•Śaivism and the Tantric Traditions•2020

Academic study of the tantric traditions has blossomed in recent decades, in no small measure thanks to the magisterial contributions of Alexis G.J.S. Sanderson, until 2015 Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford University. This collection of essays honours him and touches several 􀀄􀀅elds of Indology that he has helped to shape (or, in the case of Śaivism, revolutionised): the history, ritual, and philosophies of tantric Bu…

  • Rudragaṇikās

    Open Access•Dominic Goodall•ARTICLE•Cracow Indological Studies•2018•References: 3

Much ink has been spilt on the status and rôles of the Devadāsī in pre- modern times, but some Sanskrit works that contain potentially useful nuggets of information have until now, for various reasons, been neglected. To cite one instance, some scholars have drawn passages about dancers from an edition of what purports to be a Śaiva scripture called the Kāmikāgama. In 1990 however, Hélène Brunner denounced that ‘scripture’, as a late-19th-century…

    Open Access•Dominic Goodall•ARTICLE•Cracow Indological Studies•2014•Cited by: 1

The study of ritual in India is indissociable from the study of prescriptive texts. Now the Śaiva scriptures of the Śaivasiddhānta purport to lay down every aspect of the Śaiva religion, from doctrine to comportment, but they are for various reasons typically not straightforward guides to the performance of rituals and, in spite of their presenting themselves as revealed literature, they do not teach one body of ritual activity that is coherent a…

    Dominic Goodall, Arlo Griffiths•ARTICLE•Indo-Iranian Journal•2013

The string of territories called Campā, lying in what is today Vietnam, has yielded about two hundred and fifty inscriptions spanning over ten centuries, from ca. 400 well into the fifteenth century ce . These inscriptions have not yet drawn much attention from the point of view of the shared religious history of South and Southeast Asia. In the present contribution, we focus on a group of seven short Sanskrit inscriptions issued by a king named …

  • The Throne of Worship

    Open Access•Dominic Goodall•ARTICLE•Studies in History•2011•Cited by: 1

The throne of worship, which is typically a colourful grotesque of theriomorphic theologemes that is to be visualized similarly in both internal and external worship, is a common feature of most surviving tantric literature. We may often read of ritual and doctrine being locked in so close an embrace that the one may not be interpreted without the other 2 and it is certainly true that their relationship can very often be demonstrated. Indeed, one…
