Los Cargos
In this article, we present a text in Upper Necaxa Totonac describing the annual ceremonial cycle of the assignment and renewal of municipal offices, or cargos. This text provides a rare first-person account of the festivals and rituals surrounding the system of cargos, breathing some life into earlier academic accounts of the Mesoamerican cargo system and painting a clear and detailed picture of the system as it was practiced in the mid-twentiet…
I Don't Want Them to Be like Me
This study examines the language ideologies behind the shift away from the use of Upper Necaxa Totonac, an indigenous language of Mexico. Five themes characterize the discourses of the first generation of parents who socialized their children to use Spanish, the majority language, as the everyday language of communication: preoccupation with their children’s future, an unfavorable view of indigenous identity, the association of the past with suff…
Applying cognitive linguistics to teaching the Spanish prepositions por and para
L2 prepositions are traditionally taught in a non-explanatory manner by having students learn each use individually. This study examines the effectiveness of an alternative explanatory approach based on cognitive linguistics, which considers the multiple uses of a preposition as related. Consequently, learners can be shown a general schema that underlies all the uses, as opposed to treating them as unrelated items. Two groups of intermediate-leve…
The straw that broke the language's back
This article examines the factors that have led to a shift to Spanish in the Upper Necaxa Totonac communities of east-central Mexico. Despite the fact that Spanish and Totonac have been in contact since before the eighteenth century, the shift to the majority language has only occurred in the past four decades. I will show that this shift resulted from the combination of long-standing negative attitudes towards indigenous cultures with new social…
