A Simplified Questionnaire for the Assessment of Inorganic Arsenic Intake in a Japanese Population
A simplified questionnaire was developed to assess inorganic arsenic (iAs) intake level in a Japanese population. The two page questionnaire included photographs of single serving sizes of rice and cooked hijiki ( Hizikia fusiforme : brown algae), and asked subjects about the number of servings of rice and cooked hijiki, two predominant dietary sources of iAs in Japan, they consume in a day. Daily intake of iAs was estimated for 72 Japanese subje…
Source Identification Analysis of Lead in the Blood of Japanese Children by Stable Isotope Analysis
Considering the negative effect of lead (Pb) on children's neurodevelopment, Pb exposure should be minimized to the lowest extent possible, though the blood Pb (BPb) concentrations in Japanese children are among the lowest in the world. To identify the sources of Pb in blood, isotope ratios (IRs: 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb) of Pb (PbIR) in whole blood from eight Japanese children were measured by multi-collector ICP mass spectrometry. Furt…
Diet of Take-hime, the adopted daughter of the Tokugawa Shogunate and her rites for avoidance of bad lack
Urinary 8-Hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) Concentrations and Menstrual Cycle Characteristics in Female University Students
Higher concentrations of oxidative stress biomarkers are found in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, conditions linked to irregular menstrual cycles and menstrual pain. The aim of the present study was to test whether women with higher oxidative stress are more likely to show irregular menstrual cycles and severe menstrual pain compared with women with lower oxidative stress. A cross-sectional study was conducted targe…
Maternal Exposure to Pyrethroid Insecticides during Pregnancy and Infant Development at 18 Months of Age
The possible association between maternal exposure to pyrethroid insecticides (PYRs) during pregnancy and infant development was explored. Levels of exposure to PYRs was assessed by metabolite (3-phenoybenzoic acid, 3-PBA) concentration in maternal spot urine sampled in the first trimester of index pregnancy, and infant development was assessed at 18 months of age using the Kinder Infants Development Scale (KIDS), which is based on a questionnair…
Temporal Variation of Radiocarbon Concentration in Airborne Particulate Matter in Tokyo
The temporal radiocarbon variation (in terms of percent Modern Carbon: pMC) of size-fractionated airborne particulate matter (APM) collected in Tokyo between April 2002 and February 2003 was analyzed in order to get an insight into the sources of carbonaceous particles. Results indicated significant biogenic origins (approximately 40 pMC on average). In general, the seasonal and particle size variations in pMC were relatively small, with 2 except…
Environmental Fate of Gallium Arsenide Semiconductor Disposal
This article describes a methodology for the quantitative assessment of the environmental fate of gallium and arsenic from the disposal of mobile phones containing gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductors, using data from Japan. The product lifetime of mobile phones is short, and the recycling systems for such phones are currently underdeveloped. As a result, many mobile phones are disposed of via incineration and landfilling. The disposal of GaAs …
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of diet and hair of Gidra‐speaking Papuans
The carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic composition of the scalp hair and diet of Gidra-speaking people in four villages in Papua New Guinea is presented. The isotopic composition of hair was measured, while that of the diet was estimated from food consumption survey data and the measured isotopic composition and protein and carbohydrate contents of food items. The average isotopic ratios of the hair samples and of the diet varied among the four …

Carbon and nitrogen isotopic characterization for Papua New Guinea foods
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of the animal and plant food of the Gidra, who inhabit lowland Papua New Guinea and subsist mainly on hunting, gathering and horticulture, were measured to characterize the nutritional input of carbon and nitrogen of the Gidra. All the staple plant foods of the Gidra, such as sago and tuberous crops, were classified as C3 plants from their 13C/12C ratios (δ13C). The δ13C of the terrestrial mammals varied …
Dietary selenium intake of the Gidra, Papua New Guinea
Selenium (Se) concentrations in the food of the Gidra‐speaking people of Papua New Guinea were measured by fluorometry. Animal foods contained Se in larger concentrations than plant foods. Animal foods of aquatic origin contained more Se than those of terrestrial origin. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed an association between Se and the animal's mercury content. Se concentrations in rice and wheat flour, which were imported from out…
