Population development and burial practices in the Hungarian Middle Ages
centuries. A significant decrease in ex° values in the later cluster (mean = 28.6 years) compared to the earlier one (mean = 33.2 years), coupled with a higher proportion of child burials (36.2% vs. 25.0%), suggests that Christianization led to increased mortuary inclusion of children. The LDA model confirmed that ex° values moderately distinguished between archaeological periods (56.5% classification accuracy). These patterns reflect not only bi…
A unified descriptive method for analysing artificial cranial deformation from a palaeopathological perspective
The study's goal is to propose a unified descriptive method for analysing artificial cranial deformation (ACD) in order to achieve consistent descriptions as well as to document the modification from a palaeopathological perspective. A number of examinations have dealt with the fact that ACD can either directly cause or predispose the formation of pathological and neurological lesions. The bulk of earlier studies only have focused on one or a few…
Antropológiai jelentés a tiszavasvári Dessewffy-kripta csontmaradványainak azonosításáról
The exhumation carried out in the sepulchral vault of the Dessewffy family in Bűdszentmihály (Tiszavasvári) was regrettably made timely by the recent devastation in the vault in 2015. The exhumation directed by Vasvári Pál Museum in Tiszavasvári could be fulfilled through the good offices of the members of local civil organisations and the co-operation of the Roman Catholic Church. It is planned that the family vault is being renovated and the sk…
Population development in a micro region (Northern Hajdúság) of Hungary in the 10th – 13th century – A craniometric analysis
Population development in a microregion (Northern Hajdúság) of Hungary in the 10th–13th century – A craniometric analysis. Exceptionally rich anthropological material is available from the Northern Hajdúság microregion (Tiszántúl region, Hungary) from the 10th–13th century through five representative cemeteries. The five cemeteries, namely Hajdúdorog-Gyúlás (10th century), Hajdúdorog-Kövecseshalom (11th century), Hajdúdorog-Temetőhegy (11th centu…
Linear Measurements of the Neurocranium Are Better Indicators of Population Differences than Those of the Facial Skeleton
The aim of this study is to individualize potential differences between two cranial regions used to differentiate human populations. We compared the neurocranium and the facial skeleton using skulls from the Great Hungarian Plain. The skulls date to the 1st–11th centuries, a long space of time that encompasses seven archaeological periods. We analyzed six neurocranial and seven facial measurements. The reduction of the number of variables was car…
History of the Peoples of the Great Hungarian Plain in the First Millennium
We carried out an examination relying on six dimensions of 1,573 crania coming from the Great Hungarian Plain. The crania represent seven archeological periods: Sarmatian age (1-4th century), the period of transition (about 400-420), Hun and Gepidic epochs (about 420-455 and 455-567, respectively), early Avar age (about 568-670), late Avar period (about 670-895), the epoch of the Hungarian conquest and settlement (about 895-1000), and the Arpadia…
