    María J López, María Jesús López Sánchez-Vizcaíno•ARTICLE•English Studies•2023•References: 2

This article focuses on the central role of Don Quixote (1605, 1615) in J.M. Coetzee's Jesus novels, arguing for the relevance of the fact that it is Benengeli, the fictional Moorish historian – and not Cervantes – who is presented as the author of the Spanish novel. This is first explored in relation to the analogy that The Childhood of Jesus (2013) makes between authorship and paternity, along with the depiction of the relationship between auth…

María J López, María Jesús López Sánchez-Vizcaíno•BOOK•Acts of visitation•2011

This study traces, in J.M. Coetzee's fictional and non-fictional production, an imaginative and intellectual masterplot deriving from Coetzee's perception of European presence in (South) Africa as having its origin in an act of illegitimate penetration and fraudulent visitation. In Coetzee's novels, the historical and political problem of a hostile occupation and unfair distribution of the land finds a correspondence in the domestic space of hous…

  • Two-year impact of the Spanish smoking law on exposure to secondhand smoke: Evidence of the failure of the ‘Spanish model’

María J López, Manel Nebot et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Importantly, however, SHS levels were even higher than before the law was implemented in venues still allowing smoking. The data obtained in this study clearly show that the 'Spanish model' is not protecting the health of hospitality workers and that a complete ban is required. Furthermore, this st…

  • Samuel Beckett’s Trilogy, Alain Badiou and the Subtraction from the State and the Community

    Open Access•María J López•ARTICLE•Estudios Irlandeses•2013

The subtraction from forms of community and resistance to figures of authority that we find in Samuel Beckett’s Trilogy can be approached in the light of Alain Badiou’s critique of communitarian ethics and of the administrative and management function of the state, in which the individual is considered as a subset. It can also be seen as informed by the particular historical manifestations of political totalitarianism and authoritarianism that ch…

Coetzee, a relation that has generally passed unnoticed among critics. This relation is brought to the foreground in Coetzee’s most recent novel, The Childhood of Jesus (2013), but it also underlies his previous ones, Age of Iron (1998), Disgrace (2000), and Slow Man (2005), as well as h…

Virginia Woolf’s engagement with English national identity in Between the Acts (1941) cannot be seen as separate from the novel’s Gothic dimension, whose social and political work in this literary work has not been analyzed so far. In Between the Acts, there is a continuous blurring and disruption of the boundaries, spaces and genealogies that should define the familiar and native character of the community, with the subsequent interruption of th…
