  • Area-based conservation in the twenty-first century

Open Access•Sean Maxwell, Sean L Maxwell et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2020

Humanity will soon define a new era for nature-one that seeks to transform decades of underwhelming responses to the global biodiversity crisis. Area-based conservation efforts, which include both protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, are likely to extend and diversify. However, persistent shortfalls in ecological representation and management effectiveness diminish the potential role of area-based conservation in …

  • A Gray Whale in Magdalenian Perigord. Species identification of a bone projectile point from La Madeleine (Dordogne, France) using collagen fingerprinting

    Open Access•Jean-Marc Pétillon, François-Xavier Chauvière et al.•ARTICLE•Paléo•2019

The Cetacean bone artifact described in this paper is the result of excavations carried out in La Madeleine (Tursac, Dordogne) under the direction of D. Peyrony, between 1910-1913. It was discovered in the middle layer (“couche moyenne”) of the stratigraphy described by Capitan and Peyrony and subsequently attributed to the “Magdalenian V” by H. Breuil (i.e the beginning of the Upper Magdalenian). This layer corresponds to layers C25 to C20 of th…

  • Boom-and-Bust Development Patterns Across the Amazon Deforestation Frontier

    Open Access•Ana S L Rodrigues, Robert M Ewers et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2009

Boom and Bust The Brazilian Amazon is renowned for its biodiversity and for its influence on climate regulation and geochemical cycles. It is also one of the country's poorest regions. For decades, much economic development has been pursued through conversion of forest for agriculture and cattle-ranching. Rodrigues et al. (p. 1435 ) investigated whether this pattern of land use brings lasting prosperity by analyzing data on the economic developme…

  • Global Biodiversity Conservation Priorities

    Open Access•Thomas M Brooks, R A Mittermeier et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2006

The location of and threats to biodiversity are distributed unevenly, so prioritization is essential to minimize biodiversity loss. To address this need, biodiversity conservation organizations have proposed nine templates of global priorities over the past decade. Here, we review the concepts, methods, results, impacts, and challenges of these prioritizations of conservation practice within the theoretical irreplaceability/vulnerability framewor…

  • Reconciling biodiversity conservation, people, protected areas, and agricultural suitability in Mexico

    Open Access•Katrina Brandon, L J Gorenflo et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 2

  • Effectiveness of the global protected area network in representing species diversity

    Open Access•Ana S L Rodrigues, Sandy J Andelman et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2004

  • Status and Trends of Amphibian Declines and Extinctions Worldwide

Open Access•Simon Robertson Stuart, Simon N Stuart et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2004

The first global assessment of amphibians provides new context for the well-publicized phenomenon of amphibian declines. Amphibians are more threatened and are declining more rapidly than either birds or mammals. Although many declines are due to habitat loss and overutilization, other, unidentified processes threaten 48% of rapidly declining species and are driving species most quickly to extinction. Declines are nonrandom in terms of species' e…
