Millet and honey in a Late Bronze Age Kirkendrup–Jenišovice-type bronze cup from the Somló Hill
The study presents a recently discovered bronze cup and the results of its THM-GC/MS analysis from Somló Hill, County Veszprém, Hungary. The cup came to light during an organised metal detector survey in 2024 as part of a hoard of 2,934 artefacts (Hoard VIII). This elaborately decorated vessel belongs to the supra-regional group of metal vessels known as Kirkendrup-Jenišovice-type cups. These cups are typically dated to the Ha B1 phase and occasi…
The Early Iron Age assemblage from Ártánd between regional upheaval and interregional identity
The ostentatious assemblage discovered near Ártánd, in eastern Hungary, is one of the most important and most perplexing finds of the Early Iron Age in the Carpathian Basin. The sheer amount and the outstanding craftsmanship of the items strongly indicate that the assemblage is closely associated with a member or members of a prominent elite group. Much of the scholarly attention the assemblage has received stems from the presence of a bronze hyd…
Later prehistoric hoarding and habitation on Somló Hill, western Hungary
Somló Hill (Veszprém County, Hungary) is a prominent Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age hilltop settlement. Six new hoards present the unparalleled opportunity to study hoarding traditions and depositional practices, and to evaluate the changing roles and functions of the hilltop site
Nagyberki-Szalacska – a Hallstatt Period Centre of Power in Transdanubia
A unique Early Iron Age brooch from Somló Hill
The aim of this paper is to present an important addition to our knowledge about the Early Iron Age of Somló Hill. In early February 2023, during a metal detector survey of the hill volunteer detectorist Roland Moklovsky found a bronze brooch decorated with a small ornithoid figurine. Although the item is a stray find, its typological relations, and technical characteristics make it one of the most significant archaeological discoveries on the hi…
A Late Bronze Age Collar from Somló Hill
An assemblage of over 5800 metal artefacts was discovered on Somló Hill during an archaeological metal detector survey in 2024. Preliminary typo-chronological examinations suggest that the new hoard most plausibly dates to the second half of the Ha B period. This report focuses on the most outstanding artefact in the assemblage, a gold-foil-covered neck collar (Halskragen). This collar is a unique piece of jewellery, not yet fully matched in styl…

Szalacska and the Hallstatt period metal vessels from Western Hungary
Conventionally, Nagyberki-Szalacska is thought to be one of the most significant Early Iron Age sites in Western Hungary. Its importance is underlined by a few metal sheet fragments unearthed in 1941 during the looting of a tumulus of the Szalacska cemetery. Their rich decoration and the traces of the manufacturing process as well as other marks suggest that the metal sheet was used as a cover for a vessel made of some organic material. The decor…
Hallstatt period hoard from Somló Hill
In January 2023, the National Institute of Archaeology of the Hungarian National Museum launched a new research programme, the aim of which has been to explore the Somló Hill (Somló-hegy) (Veszprém County), a site neglected by systematic field research focusing on Late Bronze Age (LBA) and Early Iron Age (EIA) inhabitation. Somló Hill was often considered one of the most important EIA power centres in the western part of the Carpathian Basin. How…

A hatalmas kollekció eredetileg a maga korábanhíres, ritka (részben hungarica) könyv-, festmény- és metszetanyaggal rendelkezett, ellenben jelentős részét tettékki különböző régiségek. A megvásárolt hagyatékrész a rézkortól kezdődően egészen a késő népvándorlás korigterjed, nagyobb részét r…
Middle Iron Age Cemetery from Alsónyék, Hungary
In 2008 a section of a Middle Iron Age cemetery was unearthed at Alsónyék (Tolna County, Hungary). The 16 graves can be dated broadly to the 5th and maybe the early 4th century BC. The significance of this discovery lies in the diversity of burial customs and grave goods as well as in the fact that sites from this period are relatively rare in Transdanubia. In addition, already these 16 graves make the cemetery the second largest Middle Iron Age …

The Late Hallstatt Age Burials of Southern Transdanubia and A Missing Link
For almost four decades our knowledge about the Late Hallstatt Age in southern Transdanubia has been fundamentally shaped by two significant sites: the burial ground near Beremend and Szentlőrinc. New discoveries in today’s Tolna County, however, lead us to revise some of conclusions drawn based on these sites as well as to realise the complex ways how the burial grounds and the communities using them were integrated into different cultural and s…
