  • Analysis of burnt schist outcrops in the alps: Relation to historical archaeology and Hannibal's crossing in 218 B.C

    Open Access•William C Mahaney, Michael W Milner et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Identification of the exact route followed by Hannibal during his invasion of Italia in the Second Punic War is one of the major questions of antiquity and one that historians/archaeologists have long studied. One of the many clues in the ancient literature that can help answer this question is the mention of fired rock, the result of a conflagration Hannibal is reputed to have employed to reduce the size of boulders in a blocking rockslide some …

  • Radiocarbon Dates from Neolithic and Bronze Age Hunter-Gatherer Cemeteries in the Cis-Baikal Region of Siberia

    Open Access•Andrzej W Weber, Roelf P Beukens et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2006•Cited by: 15•References: 13

Extensive radiocarbon dating of human remains from Neolithic and Bronze Age hunter-gatherer cemeteries in the Cis-Baikal region of Siberia has been undertaken as a part of the multidisciplinary examination of this material conducted by the Baikal Archaeology Project (BAP; http://baikal.arts.ualberta.ca). Due to the large number of analyzed samples, this paper reports the 14 C results only in the context of the basic archaeological information abo…

  • Diet and ethnicity during the Viking colonization of northern Scotland: Evidence From Fish Bones and Stable Carbon Isotopes

    Open Access•James H Barrett, Roelf P Beukens et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2001•Cited by: 19•References: 22

Diet and ethnicity are strongly related. Recent work on fish-bone ratios and stable carbon isotopes suggest that the Vikings increased the fish contribution to the diet of Orkney and Shetland by a greater investment in deep-sea fishing

  • Radiocarbon dating and marine reservoir correction of Viking Age Christian burials from Orkney

    Open Access•James H Barrett, Roelf P Beukens et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2000•Cited by: 11•References: 16

  • High-Precision Intercomparison at Isotrace

    Open Access•Roelf P Beukens•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1990•Cited by: 4•References: 1

I conducted a high-precision comparison at the 0.2% to 0.3% level with samples supplied by the radiocarbon laboratory of the Quaternary Research Center at the University of Washington (QRC). Four samples with ages ranging from modern to > 50,000 BP were dated in a blind test. The absence of cosmic-radiation background in AMS dating is a major advantage for dating samples > 35,000 BP. The reliability of AMS dates > 35,000 BP depends entirely on un…

  • Progress at the Isotrace Radiocarbon Facility

    Open Access•Roelf P Beukens, Debbie M Gurfinkel et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1986•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Since August 1984 over 100 samples have been analyzed. 12 C, 13 C, and 14 C isotopes were measured after acceleration and all dates were corrected for natural and preparation-induced fractionation. A precision of better than 1.0% was obtained for samples 10,000 yr BP or less and these results were shown to be reproducible at precision levels as low as 0.3%. An accuracy of better than 1.0% was demonstrated for the same age range by analyzing sampl…
