Open Access•Kenichiro Tsukamoto, Octavio Q Esparza Olguín et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2026

This study examines the relationship between the Long Count and emergent kingship in the central Maya Lowlands. The Long Count was instrumental in the prosperity of lowland Maya kingship during the Classic period (ca. a.d. 250–900), yet its initial application in relation to the emergence of kingship remains poorly understood. We conducted epigraphic, iconographic, and archaeological research at the Maya site of El Palmar, Campeche, Mexico. By in…

  • Astronomy and Architecture in the El Palmar Area, Campeche, Mexico

    Open Access•Ivan Šprajc, Kenichiro Tsukamoto•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2025•References: 31

Archaeoastronomical studies accomplished in recent decades have revealed that the important civic and ceremonial buildings in the Maya area and elsewhere in Mesoamerica were oriented on astronomical grounds. The dates recorded by solar orientations, which prevail, and the intervening intervals composed easily manageable observational calendars that facilitated the planning of agricultural and related ceremonial activities in the yearly cycle. • Household Participation in the Lithic Industry at the Took' Witz Group at El Palmar, Campeche, Mexico

    Open Access•Kelsey J Sullivan, Kenichiro Tsukamoto•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2025•References: 4

This study examines the organization of large-scale chert biface production in the Maya Lowlands, focusing on Took' Witz, an architectural group of El Palmar in Campeche, Mexico. Excavations and debitage analysis at three plazuelas and a major debitage deposit revealed a complex lithic industry. The results identified segmented production activities in households, from sourcing materials and early-stage reduction to late-stage biface production. …

Open Access•Xanti Sirani Ceballos Pesina, Agustín Ortiz Butrón et al.•ARTICLE•Estudios de Cultura Maya•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The chemical residue analysis is a powerful method to identify specific activities took place on the plaster floor of a building which was gradually abandoned without leaving artifacts. We analyzed four structures of the Guzmán Group, a plazuela group of the El Palmar archaeological site, which was a residential compound of non-royal elites who held the title of lakam. The results together with other material evidence suggest that lakamob were en…

  • The Life Course of a Standard-Bearer: A Nonroyal Elite Burial at the Maya Archaeological Site of El Palmar, Mexico

    Open Access•Jessica I Cerezo-Román, Kenichiro Tsukamoto•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2021•References: 74

Inspired by life course and osteobiography approaches, this article explores the life and death of an individual associated with thelakamtitle ("banner" in Colonial Yukatek Maya; thus, a "standard-bearer"), a nonroyal elite of Late Classic period Maya society (AD 600-850). Although these elites are depicted on polychrome vessels and carved monuments, little is known about their life experiences and mortuary practices. The present analysis centers…

  • Building a high‐resolution chronology at the Maya archaeological site of El Palmar, Mexico

Open Access•Kenichiro Tsukamoto, Fuyuki Tokanai et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 15

This paper discusses how detailed analyses of archaeological contexts and macrobotanical remains are critical for building a high‐resolution chronology in archaeological research. While the application of Bayesian modelling has improved chronology‐building significantly, archaeologists have sometimes neglected different dates recovered from the same depositional layer without further scrutiny. Based on 78 radiocarbon samples, this problem is chal…

Open Access•Kenichiro Tsukamoto, Javier López Camacho et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 44

This article examines the significance of outlying groups in the spatial organization of Classic Maya settlements. The relative scarcity of textual records concerning outlying groups has often made it difficult for researchers to analyze in detail the political interactions between individuals associated with these groups and the royal authority. The recent discovery of a hieroglyphic stairway at the Guzmán Group, an outlying group of El Palmar, …

  • Mesoamerican Plazas: Arenas of Community and Power

Rodrigo Liendo Stuardo, Javier López Mejía et al.•BOOK•Mesoamerican Plazas•2014•Cited by: 13

In this chapter, we reflect on the mechanisms through which political activity becomes incorporated into communal social and cultural life by the creation of spaces for permanent collective action. Our impression is that routine aspects of communitarian life are usually framed by cyclical events capable of attracting a sizable number of individuals leading to a collective experience \nwith political connotations. Hence, our goal is to highlight t…
