  • Rural production and land use at Iron Age Clazomenae, Ionia

Open Access•Tom Maltas, Julia Tanzer et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2026•References: 17

We present new evidence for the nature of agricultural production and land use in the Iron Age Aegean through archaeobotanical remains recovered from the site of Clazomenae in Ionia, western Anatolia. The spectrum of crops and wild resources utilised at the site largely conforms to those recorded elsewhere in the Iron Age Aegean but includes rare finds of caper and sloe that support their status as likely foodstuffs in the region. High proportion…

  • Late Bronze Age crops from Çine-Tepecik, western Anatolia

    Open Access•Tom Maltas, Sevinç Günel•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024

A dearth of published archaeobotanical data from the Late Bronze Age of western Anatolia limits our understanding of agricultural production in this key area. Recent excavations at Çine-Tepecik provide insights into farming and the political economy in the kingdom of Mira within the lands of Arzawa. Archaeobotanical assemblages indicate that farming was structured to meet both domestic and institutional consumption; the former utilising a wide ra…

  • From horticulture to agriculture

Open Access•Tom Maltas, Vasıf Şahoğlu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•References: 23

We combine stable isotope analysis of crop remains with functional ecological analysis of their associated weeds to investigate arable farming strategies at Late Chalcolithic Bakla Tepe and Liman Tepe, western Anatolia. Our results reveal ‘low-input’ cultivation practices at both sites, with cereals grown on plots with low soil fertility that received low to moderate levels of manuring. In contrast, water supply was unlikely to have been a limiti…

  • Archaeobotanical Remains from Tel Gezer, Israel, and their Implications for the ‘Threshing Floors’ of Field VI

    Open Access•Tom Maltas, Lyndelle Webster•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2022•References: 8

Alternating laminae of charred ash and packed earth uncovered in Field VI of Tel Gezer, Israel, have been interpreted as the remains of Iron Age threshing floors. Recent geoarchaeological research has, however, led to the reinterpretation of similar deposits elsewhere as the remains of a trash heap. This paper presents the results of analysis and dating of charred plant remains that were recovered from the laminated deposit of Gezer Field VI and …

  • Prehistoric Farming Settlements in Western Anatolia

Tom Maltas, Vasıf Şahoğlu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Recovery of archaeobotanical assemblages from Late Chalcolithic Bakla Tepe and Liman Tepe in western Anatolia has provided the opportunity for in-depth analysis of agricultural strategies and the organisation of farming-related activity at the two sites. We find that Late Chalcolithic farmers utilised five major crop taxa, potentially including two mixed crops. The two sites also provide the first evidence for Spanish vetchling and winged vetchli…
