Amber workshops in Central Europe during the Early Iron Age. Technology, chemical analyses, and Amber Roads
The largest peak in the distribution of raw amber from the Baltic and the North Sea throughout European history can be identified in the middle of the 1st millennium BC. Raw amber was processed in the amber workshops the Early Iron Age (800–370 BC). This study reveals how these amber workshops can be reliably identified and what their distribution reveals about long-distance exchange systems in Europe. The amber was not only a strategic commodity…
Is It the Floor or Isn't It the Floor? How to Interpret the Homogeneous Infill of a Prehistoric House
The floors of sunken houses can provide important insights into how these spaces were used and into the processes that shaped them, thereby contributing to broader interpretation at an archaeological site. When the floors are homogeneous, and the palimpsest of individual occupational horizons is difficult to distinguish, a combination of analytical methods is required. The infill of the La Tène sunken house at Němčice, Czech Republic, was analyse…
Moravian amber finds from the La Tène period in the context of the discovery of an amber workshop in the central agglomeration of Němčice (Prostějov District)
The study presents an assemblage of amber artefacts chronologically classif ied in the early to final phases of the La Tène period (LT B – LT D) while also discussing the use of amber in the preceding period. Amber occurs relatively sporadically in Moravia in the context of grave finds, at common lowland settlements as well as at hilltop sites. An excavation at the central agglomeration of Němčice uncovered a sunken hut interpreted as an amber wo…
Burials and Rituals in the La Tène Period
The central agglomeration Němčice in Moravia gave the name – the Němčice/Roseldorf type – to the entire gradually recognised group of large lowland settlements with production and distribution functions existing in La Tène Europe in the 3 rd –2 nd century BC. In addition to settlement and production features, several ditched quadrangular enclosures were also identified at the Němčice settlement. One of these, feature 525, was investigated in 2022…
Hradiště Černov
The Černov hillfort in Ježkovice (Vyškov District, Moravia), built on a prominent promontory above the Rakovec Valley, was discovered more than a hundred years ago, but knowledge about it has evolved gradually. From a chronological perspective, it is primarily associated in the literature with the Early La Tene period, to which the massive fortifications and most of the finds recorded so far date. The second important epoch is represented by arte…
Terénnímu odkryvu předcházelo využití nedestruktivních metod, a to především pravidelných povrchových prospekc…
Verification of Geophysical Surveys by New Archaeological Excavations on the Grounds of the Middle La Tène Site of Němčice in 2021–2022
The Němčice site located in a strategic area of an agricultural plateau represents one of the most important archaeological sites in Moravia. Non-destructive archaeological surveys including a largescale magnetometer survey, field artefact collections, and metal detector surveys have been carried out there repeatedly over the past two decades. New archaeological excavations during a new project were focused on selected areas and situations identi…
Němčice
The central agglomeration of Němčice in Moravia was one of the most important archaeological sites of the La Tène period in Central Europe. This article presents current interdisciplinary research on the site, including the discovery of the earliest glass workshop in Transalpine Europe
K poznání charakteru a rozsahu oppida Staré Hradisko (okr.
Eneolitický kostrový pohřební ritus na Moravě ve světle radiokarbonového datování / The Eneolithic inhumation burial rite in Moravia in light of radiocarbon dating
The article addresses the chronology of Eneolithic inhumation burials in Moravia based on radiocarbon dating. A total of 17 individuals were dated using 20 radiocarbon dates, primarily individuals without grave goods or individuals from problematic contexts. The study mainly covers the period of the Early Eneolithic, to a lesser extent the Middle and Late Eneolithic. The find contexts and anthropological assessments are newly published for most o…
Central Sites and the Development of Rural Settlements from the Middle to Late La Tène Period in Central Moravia
At a certain point in time, there were two central places in central Moravia: an older unfortified central agglomeration near the present-day village of Němčice nad Hanou and a younger oppidum at Staré Hradisko. Each of this centres had its own approach to raw materials, orientation of the socio-economic contacts, and possibly political focus as well. Němčice, being located at one of the main branches of the Amber Road, connected the Middle Danub…
Dva mimořádné hroby z laténského pohřebiště v Rousínově
Development-led excavation in Rousínov in 2017 uncovered a La Tène cemetery in which 30 graves were excavated. Out of these, two exceptional graves, a rich female inhumation and a warrior’s cremation grave, are discussed in detail in this paper. In addition to typological determination of artefacts, the paper includes the results of a survey and conservation work on metal artefacts and anthropological analysis. The inhumation burial of a gracile …
