  • Are Policies Implemented Where Most Needed? Exploring Equity in School‐Based Smoking Prevention in 2013 and 2016 in Six European Cities

Open Access•Nicolas Mélard, Alexandre Jacquemain et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2025

BACKGROUND: Health policies are key social determinants of health, but may cause inequalities if their implementation does not match local needs and if resources are misallocated. This study tests the inverse prevention law on school tobacco policies, assessing inequity in their implementation and identifying contributing factors. METHODS: A student survey and a staff survey were conducted in 38 schools across six European cities in 2013 and 2016…

  • Semiautomatic Toolmark Classification in Chased Metals Using Surface Microtopography

Open Access•Yoko Arteaga, Nicolas Mélard et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•References: 9

Chasing is one of the main decorative techniques found in metal work. The imprints left by different chasing tools are unique not only to the tool, but also to the chaser. The analysis and characterisation of toolmarks provide vast information that is valuable for the understanding of an object. Microtopography is a non-contact imaging technique that allows a metrical analysis of a surface on a microscopic scale. In this paper, metal mock-ups mad…

  • Renaissance plaster casts

Open Access•Gianluca Gariani, Charlotte Hochart et al.•ARTICLE•Spotlight•2021

As part of an ongoing project dealing with the technical study of 15th century Florentine devotional reliefs, a focus was made to investigate their production by serial casting. Manufacturing techniques of the so-called Madonne di gesso were investigated on 12 artworks chosen after three different models of Donatello and B. Bellano, Desiderio da Settignano and Antonio Rossellino. Results obtained with a structured light 3D scanner were invaluable…

  • Direct evidence of Neanderthal fibre technology and its cognitive and behavioral implications

    Open Access•Bruce Hardy, B L Hardy et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Reports•2020

Neanderthals are often considered as less technologically advanced than modern humans. However, we typically only find faunal remains or stone tools at Paleolithic sites. Perishable materials, comprising the vast majority of material culture items, are typically missing. Individual twisted fibres on stone tools from the Abri du Maras led to the hypothesis of Neanderthal string production in the past, but conclusive evidence was lacking. Here we s…

  • Cambrai (Nord).

  • Where do teens smoke? Smoking locations of adolescents in Europe in relation to smoking bans in bars, schools and homes

    Open Access•Naomi A van Westen-Lagerweij, Naomi A Lagerweij et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2019•References: 1

This study aimed to assess where European adolescents smoke. Data of 2,140 13-19-year-olds from 55 secondary schools in seven European cities was analysed using multilevel logistic regression analyses. Adolescents most often reported regularly smoking in 'other public locations (e.g., streets and parks)' (69%) and friends' homes (50%). Adolescents were less likely to smoke in bars, at school or at home when exposed to strong smoking bans at these…

  • Cambrai (Nord).

    Open Access•Nicolas Mélard•ARTICLE•In Situ•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 1

  • Gravettian painting and associated activity at Le Moulin de Laguenay (Lissac-sur-Couze, Corrèze)

Open Access•Nicolas Mélard, Romain Pigeaud et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Presented here is the so far unique discovery and interpretation of an occupation area directly associated with Upper Palaeolithic cave paintings. The paintings, of red spots and hand stencils, overlook two hearths with selected flints. There were also fragments of stalactite, deduced by analysis and experiment to be waste products from the manufacture of beads. The authors deduce that the hearths and their assemblage complement the ritual nature…

    Open Access•Nicolas Mélard•ARTICLE•Gallia préhistoire•2008•Cited by: 8

The artistic creations of Magdalenian peoples are multiple and astonishingly rich. In the domain of portable art, engraved stones play an important role in the iconography of this period and clearly reflect the diversity and complexity of Magdalenian representations. Since its discovery, the site of la Marche (Lussac-les-Châteaux, Vienne), dated to the Middle Magdalenian, has been known for its engraved stones; several researchers have attempted …
