  • Halaf and Late Chalcolithic occupations at Shakar Tepe in the Shahrizor Plain, Iraqi Kurdistan

Open Access•Takahiro Odaka, Osamu Maeda et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Research in Asia•2025•Referencias: 3

The Shahrizor Plain is one of the ideal fields for tracking the transition from Neolithic village life in the Fertile Crescent to Urbanisation which occurred in Mesopotamia because of its geographical location connecting the mountainside valleys along the Zagros and the downstream Diyala River that flows into the Tigris. Our field project aims to obtain archaeological materials to unveil this process. Following the first excavations at Shakar Tep…

  • Evaluation of GIScience Exercise Using Online Educational Materials for Japanese University Students

Open Access•Hiroyuki Yamauchi, Takashi Oguchi et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2024

GIScience is essential to geography education. Different curriculums and textbooks have been developed to teach GIScience in classrooms through lectures and exercises corresponding to the educational situation of each country. We developed e-learning materials based on existing research outcomes for GIScience education in Japan, such as the Japanese GIS core curriculum for university education. Using the materials, we held a three-day intensive G…

  • Geomorphic reconstruction of formation and recession processes of waterfalls of the Kaminokawa river basin on Osumi Peninsula, southern Kyushu, Japan

    Open Access•Hidetsugu Yoshida, Yuichi S Hayakawa et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2017•Referencias: 44

To assess the geomorphological importance of waterfall recession in volcanic bedrock, we examined recession rates of six waterfalls in the lower reaches of Kaminokawa river basin on the Osumi Peninsula in southern Kyushu. The examination was performed with an empirical equation that uses a dimensionless parameter obtained by dimensional analysis of relevant measured factors, including erosive force, size of waterfall, and bedrock resistance. Weld…

  • Concurrent and sustainable development of a local-scale digital heritage inventory through action research at Bat, Oman

Open Access•Yasuhisa Kondo, Takehiro Miki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage…•2016

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a concurrent implementation of sustainable inventory for the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn in the interior of Oman. Design/methodology/approach – A digital heritage inventory (DHI) was developed through an action research to realize demands of the local agent and to co-design the solution. The Ministry of Heritage and Culture of Oman, the local agent, demanded to have arc…

  • Utilization of laser range finder and differential GPS for high‐resolution topographic measurement at Hacituğrul Tepe, Turkey

    Open Access•Yuichi S Hayakawa, Hiro'omi Tsumura•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2009•Referencias: 1

Topographic maps are fundamental for geoarchaeological field studies and archaeological excavations. However, traditional methods of topographic mapping, as well as modern high‐tech methods such as airborne laser scanning and photogrammetry of high‐resolution satellite images, are often cost‐ineffective for field studies in terms of time, money, and labor. We here propose a method to measure topography for archaeological sites and surrounding are…

  • Rapid On-site Topographic Mapping with a Handheld Laser Range Finder for a Geoarchaeological Survey in Syria

    Open Access•Yuichi S Hayakawa, Takashi Oguchi et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2007•Referencias: 19

A digital elevation model and a topographic map of an archaeological site in Syria were created from a field topographic survey with a handheld laser range finder and data post-processing using a notebook personal computer with Geographical Information System software. The method enabled rapid on-site topographical mapping even under technical and political restrictions in the country. In an area of about 1 km2, coordinates of random points on th…
