A multi-period riverine landscape narrative of the Ure Valley north of the Roman town of Aldborough ( Isurium Brigantum )
Geoarchaeological survey and palaeoenvironmental analyses were conducted in the floodplain of the river Ure to the north of the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough, North Yorkshire) as part of a complementary campaign of geophysical survey and excavations (2018–2024). This involved an intensive coring survey to understand the development of the valley and the environmental context of the settlement. A large palaeochannel was discovered so…
Aldborough and the metals economy of northern England, c . AD 345–1700
Increasing interdisciplinary analysis of geoarchaeological records, including sediment and ice cores, permits finer-scale contextual interpretation of the history of anthropogenic environmental impacts. In an interdisciplinary approach to economic history, the authors examine metal pollutants in a sediment core from the Roman metal-producing centre of Aldborough, North Yorkshire, combining this record with textual and archaeological evidence from…
Landscape and Settlement in the Hinterland of Roman Aldborough ( Isurium Brigantum )
This paper presents the results of recent geophysical survey work in the vicinity of the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough, North Yorkshire). It combines results from research projects with information from developer-funded work to assess the nature of settlement in the area at the time of the foundation of the Roman town and through the period of its use. The work confirms that there was no major pre-Roman Iron Age centre in the area a…

Archaeological Field Survey in the Environs of Aldborough ( Isurium Brigantum )
This paper presents the results of field surveys undertaken in 1987 and 1989–97 in the immediate vicinity of the Roman civitas capital of Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough, North Yorks). It presents the Roman finds from the survey, providing quantified analyses of pottery and ceramic building material as well as catalogues of the other artefacts collected. These studies provide new evidence for the history of the town and form the basis for a discuss…
Geophysics
This paper article explores archaeology as a creative practice by engaging specifically with the processes and visuals of geophysics. An area of archaeology considered highly scientific, a different way of looking reveals geophysics to be a poetic form of landscape study. The processes used to collect, alter, interpret and visualize visualise the data are creative acts that have parallels with more easily recognizable recognisable arts practices …
Investigations at Falacrinae , the birthplace of Vespasian
