  • Negotiating masculinities in times of crisis

    Open Access•Amna Chaudhry, John Amis•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 13

This study provides a detailed analysis of the ways in which male Pakistani civil servants negotiated their masculinity while working as frontline workers during the COVID‐19 pandemic. We show how these men, in high‐pressure work environments, invoked multiple hegemonic and non‐hegemonic manifestations of masculinities as they experienced extreme stress. We contribute to the existing hegemonic masculinity literature by illuminating the ways in wh…

  • Reframing childhood obesity

    Open Access•James M Vardaman, John Amis et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 60

Childhood obesity remains one of the defining challenges of our time, with government response around the world being largely ineffective. This has been particularly the case in the USA, which continues to suffer high rates of childhood obesity despite numerous legislative interventions to combat it. In order to develop insight into this ongoing catastrophic change failure, we engaged in a three-year qualitative study of the implementation of pol…

  • The Organizational Reproduction of Inequality

John Amis, John M Amis et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Annals•2020

With societal inequalities continuing to increase and organizations providing the vast majority of people with their income, we wanted to assess the ways in which organizational practices are implicated in the burgeoning of social and economic inequality. Following an integrative review of the literature drawn from across the social sciences, we found that the multiple ways in which five major organizational practices—hiring, role allocation, pro…

Methods. We followed policy implementation in 8 high schools in Mississippi and Tennessee. We collected data between 2006 and 2009 from interviews with policymakers, administrators, teachers, and students; observations of school-based activities; and docume…

  • Interpreting change as controllable

    Open Access•James M Vardaman, John Amis et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2012•Cited by: 8•References: 75

Interpreting organizational change initiatives as controllable can mean the difference between achieving positive or negative outcomes. However, little is known about the factors that underpin such interpretations. This study examines how interpretations of controllability are influenced by individual centrality in social networks and change-related self-efficacy. Drawing on a sample of 148 US public school teachers facing a significant organizat…

  • Transnational organization and symbolic production

    John Amis, Michael L Silk et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 45

In recent years, there has been sustained debate pertaining to how global markets should be conceptualized, enacted, and addressed. The purpose of this study was to expose the pivotal managerial thought processes and practices of senior managers at Guinness and the actions of symblic workers involved in the reconciliation of trends toward increasing global cultural convergence and a need for local cultural differentiation within the “global cultu…

  • The structural antecedents of conflict in voluntary sport organizations

John Amis, Trevor Slack et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Conflict is endemic to all organizations. However, in this paper it is argued that voluntary sport and leisure organizations exhibit characteristics that render them significantly more susceptible to conflict than organizations in other institutional spheres. Using interview data obtained from members and staff of Canadian voluntary sport organizations, which had been involved in a significant conflict, four case studies were constructed. These c…
