Handbook of World Englishes
Handbook of World Englishes
History of World Englishes
The history of the construct of “World Englishes” (WE) has evolved over a short period of not more than five decades. It was in 1978 that two path‐breaking, independently organized conferences were planned in two parts of the USA.
World Englishes: Overview
The global diffusion of the English language represents two dimensions of the language: one of multicanonicity and the other of multiculturalism . These two constructs of what is called a global language have yet to be seriously recognized by the English‐language teaching (ELT) profession. The reasons for this attitude are essentially ideological, economic and, of course, attitudinal. This ominous indifference is sustained and encouraged within w…

Asian Englishes: Beyond the Canon
This book provides crucial reading for students and researchers of world Englishes. It is an insightful and provocative study of the forms and functions of English in Asia, its acculturation and nativization, and the innovative dimensions of Asian creativity. It contextualizes a variety of theoretical, applied and ideological issues with refreshing interpretations and reevaluations and can be used both as a classroom text and a resource volume.
Henry Kahane
Henry R. Kahane was born on November 2, 1902, in Berlin, Germany, ‘an Austrian in the German world’ (Kahane 1992b:40). He was raised in the intellectually stimulating world of theatre and literature and it was there that he began his formal academic life with Literaturwissenschaft , gradually moving into Romance linguistics. Henry was drawn to linguistics, ‘attracted by the magnetic personality of Ernst Gamillscheg, a trail-blazing genius, who, u…
A Medium of Shakti: Metaphorical Constructs of World Englishes
This paper discusses four metaphors that capture cultural, social, literary, ideological, and creative constructs of the English language — primarily as a medium of power, shakti. These metaphorical constructs open yet another dimension for our understanding, and indeed interpreting, the reasons for what is called the ‘triumphalism’ associated with English across world cultures. The range of such metaphors is large, and provides a rich resource o…

The paradigms of marginality
The acquisition of English in its various functions and canons is now a major motivation for the increase in multilingualism around the world. This paper addresses the responses and reactions to this linguistic reality and varied perceptions about it. It argues that most linguists have marginalized multilingualism and neglected to face the complexities of multilinguals' language behavior, being reluctant to modify, reformulate, and reassess our f…
Englishization and contact linguistics
This issue-oriented paper presents several dimensions of the hegemony of the English language across some of the world's major languages, and their implications for various approaches to contact linguistics. The importance of the issues raised here is related to the multidimensional character of the spread of English; the unique sociolinguistic contexts of English across cultures; the 'love-hate' attitudes toward the language; and the development…

The Alchemy of English: The Spread, Functions, and Models of Non-Native Englishes
What emerges from Kachru's fine work is the potential demarcation of an entire field, rather than merely the fruitful exploration of a topic. . . . [Kachru] is to be congratulated for having taken us as far as he already has and for doing so in so stimulating and so productive a fashion. -- World Englishes A potent addition to theoretical, sociolinguistic, attitudinal and methodological explorations vis-a-vis the spread and functions of, and inno…

Liberation linguistics and the Quirk Concern
A reply to ‘Language varieties and standard language’ by Sir Randolph Quirk in ET 21 (Jan 90)
World Englishes and applied linguistics
This paper addresses the issue of the relationship between world Englishes (WE) and applied linguistics. The diffusion of English is seen in terms of three concentric circles: the Inner Circle (L1 varieties, e.g. the USA and the UK), the Outer Circle (ESL varieties), and the Expanding Circle (EFL varieties). The discussion is essentially restricted to the Outer Circle in which the institutionalized non-native varieties of English are used in mult…
The sacred cows of English
Will ‘native speakers’ of English have to change some of their most cherished and least examined assumptions as the language approaches the 21st century
The Indianization of English
The imperial transplant of 1835 has taken root in the soil of the Indian subcontinent and flourishes today as an Indian language in its own right
The power and politics of English
The issues related to power and politics of the English language are presented specifically in relation to the unprecedented global spread of the language. Several perspectives-linguistic and non-linguistic-used to conceptualize the relationship between language and power are considered, particularly that of Michel Foucault. The power-related issues, and their manifestations and implications, are seen in terms of various control-acquiring strateg…

Models of English for The Third World: White Man's Linguistic Burden or Language Pragmatics
The development of non-native varieties of English in Third World countries (e.g. West Africa, the Philippines, South Asia) is of linguistic, cultural, pedagogical and sociolinguistic interest. The attitude of TESL specialists, among others, toward such varieties of English on the two sides of the Atlantic is evaluated in Prator (1968). One such attitude, endorsed by Prator, and represented by him as typically American, may be termed linguistic p…
