Boina/sombrero
This article explores the symbolic dimension of the beret and the hat in the social history of twentieth-century Spain. The use of a wide range of iconographic and hemerographic material—pictures, newspaper sketches, advertisement posters, films and journalistic chronicles—enables us to reconstruct the allegorical class struggle waged by the beret and the hat as common head coverings of the popular and middle/upper classes respectively, at least …
Populism
The concept of populism has generated endless controversy marked by both the contrasting political feelings it conveys and a particular problem of definition. This article-based on political speeches, academic literature, and relevant online sources, such as Google Ngram Viewer, catalogs of great libraries, and digital archives of newspapers-adopts a pragmatic approach to the concept throughout its history, from the moment when the noun appeared …
Shirt Movements in Interwar Europe
The article deals with a typical phenomenon of the interwar period: the proliferation of socio-political movements expressing their “mood” and identity via a paramilitary uniform mainly composed of a coloured shirt. The analysis of 34 European shirt movements reveals some common features in terms of colour, ideology and chronology. Most of them were consistent with the logic and imagery of interwar totalitarianisms, which emerged as an alleged al…
This article studies the evolution of the concept of totalitarianism in Italy fromits appearance in 1923. From that moment on, the concept went over different historical periods marked by the national as well as the international context, mainlyrelated to fascism until 1945 and after with the cold war and its changing intensity. It is surprising that Italy stayed in general so far from the so called «totalitarian paradigm », i.e., the leading uses…
How Words Reshape the Past
Modernising the past and archaising the present is a kind of unwritten rule with respect to anachronisms. Although the words ‘totalitarian’ and ‘totalitarianism' were created in the 1920s in Fascist Italy, their application henceforth to earlier, even remote, historical periods was quite commonplace. Whereas the totalitarian experience par excellence corresponds to the interwar period, the word as a key element of modern political language reache…
Totalitarian Language
This article deals with totalitarianism and its language, conceived as both the denial and to some extent the reversal of liberalism and its conceptual framework. Overcoming liberal language meant not only setting up new political terminology, but also replacing words with symbols, ideas with sensations. This is why the standard political lexicon of totalitarianism became hardly more than a slang vocabulary for domestic consumption and, by contra…
