The Evolution of Government Intervention in the Mediterranean Media System
Based on the comparative analysis of the three Western media system models distinguished by Daniel Hallin and Paolo Mancini (2004), this article revisits their thesis of a tendency towards the convergence of the Mediterranean model and the Liberal model—in terms of the weakening of links between media institutions and the political sphere—two decades after it was first posited. By studying the degree and nature of state intervention in the media …
Political power’s media capture strategies in Spain (2016–2021)
This article analyses political power's media capture strategies in Spain by addressing the central government's and several regional governments' actions between 2016 and 2021. The policies implemented by parties from across the political spectrum are studied, with similar behaviours that continue to pursue or even reinforce strategies from previous eras being observed. This confirms the trait of strong government interventionism that is typical…

Traditional medicinal plants in South Tyrol (northern Italy, southern Alps)
Background Worldwide mountain regions are recognized as hotspots of ethnopharmacologically relevant species diversity. In South Tyrol (Southern Alps, Italy), and due to the region's high plant diversity and isolated population, a unique traditional botanical knowledge of medicinal plants has flourished, which traces its history back to prehistoric times. However, changes in rural life and culture may threaten this unique biodiversity and cultural…
Impact of the digital dividend release on regional digital terrestrial television in Spain
This article describes and analyses the implications for regional terrestrial television in Spain of the withdrawal of one multiplex per self-governing region, as imposed by the 2014 National Technical Plan for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT). This measure results from the release of the digital dividend, whose frequencies (790-862 MHz) –occupied by Hertzian television up to this time– will be used for electronic communication services. The …

Press subsidy policies in Spain in the context of financial crisis (2008–2012)
While direct national press subsidies were abolished in the late 1980s, they continue to be granted in seven of Spain’s 17 regional autonomous communities. Two features of these subsidy schemes are their highly discretionary nature and their particular concern for the language component, the latter of which, in some cases, is linked to processes of nation building. Catalonia was the first regional autonomous community to introduce press subsidies…
