    Open Access•Loyd S Pettegrew•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 66

Purpose Health care organizational research should pay greater attention to the specific settings where health is practiced. An ethnographic account of humor, ritual and defiance is presented from 29 months spent in a private, concierge-type radiation oncology center. A thick description of the setting and interaction among center staff and patients is offered in an attempt to establish why qualitative research of health care settings is so impor…

  • How Patients Communicate About Their Illness

    Open Access•Loyd S Pettegrew, Ira Daniel Turkat•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This article presents two empirical investigations of how patients communicate about their illness. A review of the literature on provider-patient communication is offered. From this review, we conclude that we know intuitively more about the interaction between health care providers and their patients than the research literature has revealed. A series of research questions are advanced concerning the patient's communicative contributions to the…

    Loyd S Pettegrew, Glenda E Wolf•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This paper reports the results of a known groups-validation study of several measures of teacher stress. Role-related stress, task-based stress, and environmental stress comprised the stress measures. Groups of teachers in high schools and junior-high schools were selected on an a priori basis using administrative records of reported student discipline as the criterion. These teacher groups were then given a pencil-and-paper measure containing th…

    Open Access•Loyd S Pettegrew, Richard C Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1981•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Founded on the assumption that communicator style is situationally and contextually influenced, this study investigates the effects of job‐related stress on communicator style. It was specifically designed to measure the effects of job‐related stress factors on employee communicator style within the context of a medical center organization. Three central research questions are posed: (1) what, if any, meaningful differences in communicator style …

  • Job Related Stress in a Medical Center Organization: Management of Communication Issues

Loyd S Pettegrew, Richard Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•1980•Cited by: 4•References: 10

This study reports the first in a series of studies investigating job-related stress in a medical center organization. A specific focus concerns the relationship of certain management-communication issues to the job-related stress phenomenon. A detailed review of the job-related stress literature is made. A research model is then presented which depicts the relevant variables in the stress-management-communication inquiry. A structural analysis o…

  • Health Communication Theory and Research: An Overview of Health Organizations

    Daniel E Costello, Loyd S Pettegrew•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•1979•References: 11

This overview presents the point of view that health organizations are quite different from other organizations and, therefore, deserve to be studied as a context in their own right. An analytic framework is presented through which communication in health organizations can be studied. This framework entails a three-by-four factor matrix, where levels of communication (individual, interpersonal, group, and organizational) are associated with funct…

  • Attentiveness as a style of communication: A structural analysis

    Robert W Norton, Loyd S Pettegrew•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•1979•Cited by: 11•References: 2

Attentiveness, as a stylistic component, is introduced as a construct in its own right. A 30‐item, pencil and paper measure is presented which focuses upon behavioral signals, sensitivities, and self‐evaluations. A factor analysis and elementary linkage analysis show that the attentiveness construct can be accurately represented in terms of these three factors. Two regression analyses indicate that attentiveness is a function of posture, verbal b…

The nature of these two types of relationships are detailed and several …

  • An Investigation of Therapeutic Communicator Style

    Loyd S Pettegrew•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•1977•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The relational aspects of therapeutic communication have been shown to be important determinants of successful therapeutic outcomes. There is still lacking, however, a holistic construct of communicator style which is operable in therapeutic relationships. This research presents the first in a series of investigations which seeks to establish such a construct. A rationale is provided for studying therapeutic communication in relation to a more ge…
