(Mis)managing Finances on a Global Scale: The Accounting Documents of the Jesuit Mission to Japan
This article aims at describing the sixteenth-seventeenth century Jesuit Japan mission’s finances through its accounting documents. The article demonstrates that accounting documents played a key role in the dialogue with Rome over the mission’s financial management and needs. Portraying a mission dependent on Europe and India to secure its resources, the accounts raise the question of how religious orders managed funds on a global scale. This ar…
Introduction: Accounting Practices in Missionary Territories (Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries)
This article situates the contributions to the special issue in the context of the history of missionary economies and accounting practices. Instead of focusing on economic efficiency, new approaches in accounting history have been considering other dimensions, such as the disciplinary potential of accounting and its use as an instrument for enacting specific forms of governance. The article then presents the normative frameworks of Catholic miss…
Manuel Bastias Saavedra (dir.), Norms beyond Empire. Law-making and Local Normativities in Iberian Asia, 1500-1800: Leyde/Boston, Brill, 2022, 355 p

Japan, a Separate Province From India? Rivalries and Financial Management of Two Jesuit Missions in Asia
This article analyzes the organization of the Jesuit missions in Asia in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through the case of the relationship between the Indian mission and the Japanese mission, which was subordinate to it. It highlights the management and control methods which were specific to the Asian missions. It thus demonstrates the growing autonomy of the Japanese mission, which was trying to free itself from Indian administrative …
Trade and Finance in Global Missions (16th-18th Centuries)
Trade and Finance in Global Missions (16th-18th Centuries) is a collection of twelve articles focusing on missionary economic practices, often perceived as an important tool in their spiritual and missionary endeavours, but also raising controversies in Europe and in the overseas missions. Missionaries, just like merchants and other investors, sought the most profitable ventures and tapped into transcontinental flow of capital during the first gl…
The Glorious Martyrdom of the Cross. The Franciscans and the Japanese Persecutions of 1597
The Franciscan martyrdom of 1597 was not an unprecedented event in the young history of Japanese Christianity, as a first wave of persecutions occurred ten years earlier. But the echo it found in Asia, America and Europe, was unparalleled. This article aims to account for Franciscan success in giving worldwide publicity to what could otherwise be seen as a local event of limited consequence. The martyrdom of 1597 finds it roots in a context of te…
The Role of the Franciscans in the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and Japan in the 16th–17th Centuries: Transpacific Geopolitics
This article proposes to study the role of Franciscan missionaries in the establishment of economic and diplomatic relations between the Spanish Philippines and Japan. More specifically, it argues that the missionaries played an active part in the construction of a trans-pacific commercial and religious network connecting the Spanish Americas with Asia. In so doing, the article aims at correcting the commonplace historiographical assumption that …

This article aims to study the adaptation of the Jesuit hierarchy to the social and religious conditions of Japan in the 16th century. The Jesuit mission to Japan was established in 1549, and it flourished in the 1580s under the leadership of Alessandro Valignano, Visitor to the Missions. There, he advocated a policy of acclimation to the Japanese culture in order to blend in with the population and allow Christianity to be accepted as a religion…
