  • Exceptional Architecture and Local Tourism Impact

Open Access•Yannick Eckhardt, Jeffrey Hoffmann et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Planning & Development•2026

Exceptional architecture is widely recognized for its seeming impact on the cultural and economic trajectories of cities. However, the attractive potential of specific projects and thus their impact on the local economy remains contentious, because identifying measurable increases in outcomes such as visitor numbers is empirically challenging. This study investigates the causal effects of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg on local touri…

  • Harmony in policy? Stakeholder (dis)alignment in local heat planning in Germany

Open Access•Anna Billerbeck, Jeffrey Hoffmann et al.•ARTICLE•Utilities Policy•2026

The fate of the energy transition hinges not only on having well-crafted policies in place but on their successful implementation as well. In some cases, such as heat planning, the implementation is highly localized and involves both public and private parties without clear hierarchies, as is typical of networked multi-stakeholder governance processes. Such processes are often characterized by difficult collective decision-making due to differing…

    Open Access•Marius Zipf, Johannes Glückler et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2023•References: 5

Crucial to its success will be the harmonization of geographical variation in national jurisdictions. Germany offers a unique opportunity to explore such harmonization, as plaintiffs can choose between twelve regional courts to file a patent suit, resulting in different patent court practices within the same jurisdiction. Adopting a legal geography …

  • Navigating uncertainty in networks of social exchange

    Open Access•Jeffrey Hoffmann, Johannes Glückler•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2022•References: 24

This article analyzes the structure of socially embedded exchange under uncertainty in the context of a community currency system in Germany. We discuss three relational and path-dependent mechanisms—experience-based trust, networked reputation and public reputation—which serve as navigation practices to mitigate uncertainty. We furthermore associate these mechanisms with observable structures of exchange, namely repeated transactions and recipro…

  • Binge-Drinking Attitudes and Behaviors Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic College Students

Open Access•Julie Delaney Shields, Ashley M Archiopoli et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2016•References: 16

This study explores binge-drinking behaviors and attitudes among Hispanic and non-Hispanic college students. The authors surveyed students at the same large Hispanic-serving university used in a 1999 study by Bennett et al., partially replicating that earlier research. While the percentage of students who reported binge drinking in the present study did not differ significantly by ethnicity, Hispanic students showed the most dramatic decrease in …
