  • Results of 15 years of extended follow-up of the German porcelain workers cohort study

Open Access•Thomas Birk, Thomas J Birk et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Objectives To quantify, after extending follow-up 15 years, the relationship between occupational respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure and risk of silicosis diagnosis and lung cancer mortality in the German Porcelain Workers Cohort Study, and to estimate possible exposure thresholds for these. Methods Porcelain workers enrolled between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 1987, in a mandatory medical surveillance program including triennial …

  • Assessing vulnerability to climate change and socioeconomic stressors in the Reef Islands group, Solomon Islands

    Thomas Birk•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 45

This article assesses the vulnerability to climatic and socioeconomic stresses in the Reef Islands, Solomon Islands, an atoll island group in the Southwest Pacific. Climate change and the associated sea-level rise are often seen as the most pressing challenges to atoll communities, yet this study aims at critically re-assessing this view by placing climate in the context of a range of other internal and external stressors affecting local liveliho…

  • Climate Change and Human Mobility

Open Access•Jon Barnett, Carole L Crumley et al.•BOOK•Climate Change and Human Mobility•2012

'The greatest single impact of climate change could be on human migration', stated the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1990. Since then there has been considerable concern about the large-scale population movements that might take place because of climate change. This book examines emerging patterns of human mobility in relation to climate change, drawing on a multidisciplinary approach including anthropology and geography. It…

  • A Theory of Belief, Attitude, Intention, and Behavior Extended to the Domain of Corrective Advertising

Michael Burgoon, Deborah A Newton et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•1992

The literature on corrective advertising is replete with conflicting reports on its effectiveness in changing attitudes and/or behavior. Part of the ambiguity in the published literature is due to lack of theoretical specificity and conceptual clarity about the potential outcomes associated with mass media efforts to correct deception in commercial advertisements. Moreover, the published research suffers from methodological imprecision in measuri…

  • Nonverbal Behaviors, Persuasion, and Credibility

    Open Access•Judee K Burgoon, Thomas Birk et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1990•Cited by: 29•References: 71

This study examined the relationships among nonverbal behaviors, dimensions of source credibility, and speaker persuasiveness in a public speaking context. Relevant nonverbal literature was organized according to a Brunswikian lens model. Nonverbal behavioral composites, grouped according to their likely proximal percepts, were hypothesized to significantly affect both credibility and persuasiveness. A sample of 60 speakers gave videotaped speech…

  • Relational communication, satisfaction, compliance‐gaining strategies, and compliance in communication between physicians and patients

    Judee K Burgoon, Michael Pfau et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•1987•Cited by: 17•References: 9

Six themes of physicians' relational communication were hypothesized to predict patients' satisfaction and compliance, to relate to strategies used by physicians to gain compliance, and to relate to frequency of physician‐patient contact. Telephone interviews with 234 adults who had seen a primary care physician within the previous six months confirmed that perceived relational communication was strongly related to affective, cognitive, and behav…
