A Targeted, Co-Produced Radio Drama Series Decreased Support for Child Marriage in Ibadan, Nigeria
Child marriage, defined as marriage before the age of 18, is a human rights concern and a form of gender-based violence. We co-produced a series of radio dramas with residents of Ibadan, Nigeria that addressed common justifications for child marriage and used a difference-in-differences approach to estimate the impact of the series on knowledge of and support for the practice. The drama series led to reductions in support for child marriage, thou…
Changes in Statutory Rape Laws Across the United States From 2000 to 2021
Statutory rape definitions and exceptions varied widely between states, but within states, the laws rarely changed in the past two decades. The variability of laws across states raises questions about how statutory rape laws should be structured. Our longitudinal database will facilitate research which may provide a stronger empirical basis for future policies
The effect of extreme weather events on the frequency of child marriage
Child marriage is considered a human rights violation, and its elimination is an explicit target of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. However, there is growing concern that climate change may be threatening efforts to eliminate child marriage. We conducted a systematic review to synthesise quantitative research on the relationship between climate change and child marriage and assess the risk of bias across these studies. We identi…
Impact of Peru’s women’s emergency centres on the reporting of physical, psychological and sexual intimate partner violence
BACKGROUND: Violence against women is a global problem with serious consequences. In response, Peru established women's emergency centres or Centros de Emergencia Mujer (CEMs) in 1999, offering support services like psychological and legal counselling for women suffering from violence. CEMs also implemented preventive activities such as educational programmes and community outreach to prevent domestic violence. This study aimed to assess the impa…
Effective community entry
Effective community entry processes influence community participation and acceptance of public health interventions. Though there is a growing body of literature on the importance of community partnerships, there is a lack of pragmatic and practical documentation of the experiences involved in the community entry process as it relates to culturally sensitive topics such as child marriage which can help to support researchers working in this field…
Re-emphasizing the individual components of ‘child, early, and forced marriage’
Efforts to eliminate 'child, early, and forced marriage', human rights violations with a wide range of harmful consequences, have intensified in the past twenty years as part of a growing social movement toward gender equality. The compound phrase 'child, early, and forced marriage' has become the preferred rhetoric in recent years and communicates a range of potentially harmful aspects of marriage, including the timing and consensuality of the e…
Challenges to the Provision of Services for Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence in Canada During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic increased women's vulnerability to intimate partner and sexual violence (IPV/SV), as well as challenging organizations’ ability to respond. This research is based on a 2021 nationwide survey about the impacts of COVID-19 on IPV/SV services across Canada. Nationwide, organizations adopted several measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, including scaling back services, reducing or stopping their volunteers, and r…
The Evolution of Child Marriage as a Human Rights Concern
Child Marriage in Mainland China
Child marriage, defined as marriage before 18 years of age, has harmful consequences for health and development and is an indicator of gender inequality. We used publicly available data from the 2000 and 2010 censuses to estimate the national and provincial‐level prevalence of child marriage across mainland China. Between 2000 and 2010, the prevalence of child marriage rose from 2.41 percent to 2.85 percent among women and from 0.54 percent to 0.…
Women's Marital Experiences Following Premarital Fertility in Sub‐Saharan Africa
Objective The aim of the study was to offer a descriptive overview of the stability and quality of marriages formed by women following premarital fertility in contemporary sub‐Saharan Africa. Background Premarital sex and fertility rates are high in many sub‐Saharan African countries, yet we know little about how premarital childbirth, or even premarital conception, corresponds with women's subsequent marital outcomes. For instance, it is unknown…
Child Marriage in Canada
Child marriage, defined as formal or informal marriage before the age of 18, is a globally recognized indicator of gender inequality. Canada has placed itself at the forefront of global efforts to end child marriage as part of its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Despite these global aspirations, child marriage remains legal throughout Canada. Data from vital statistics agencies and recent censuses indicate that chi…
Defining global health as public health somewhere else
Many definitions of global health have been offered, but none properly distinguish this field from public health more generally. We propose the following definition: global health is public health somewhere else. Our definition encourages consideration of the normative dimensions of global health, and their impact on aspects of training and practice that lead to unintended consequences and critiques. Practising public health somewhere else often …

Changes in support for the continuation of female genital mutilation/cutting and religious views on the practice in 19 countries
Campaigns to end female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) have been ongoing for decades. Many countries have adopted legislation that criminalises the practice and programmatic interventions aim to reduce support for it by presenting it as a violation of human rights and by highlighting associated health risks. We used Demographic and Health Survey data from 19 countries to measure national-level trends in the prevalence of FGM/C, reported suppo…

Child marriage occurs throughout the country. Research on the social forces that perpetuate child marriage is needed to inform efforts to prevent it
Recent Trends in Premarital Fertility across Sub‐Saharan Africa
The rising age of first marriage across sub‐Saharan Africa over the past 25 years has led many scholars to predict a concurrent increase in premarital childbearing. We examine whether this anticipated increase has materialized using data from 27 countries. Our results reveal considerable heterogeneity. Although levels of premarital fertility have risen by up to 13 percent in recent years in some African countries, other countries have experienced…
