  • Status and trends of circumpolar peregrine falcon and gyrfalcon populations

Open Access•Alastair Franke, Knud Falk et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 61

The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) are top avian predators of Arctic ecosystems. Although existing monitoring efforts are well established for both species, collaboration of activities among Arctic scientists actively involved in research of large falcons in the Nearctic and Palearctic has been poorly coordinated. Here we provide the first overview of Arctic falcon monitoring sites, present trends for lon…

  • Migratory Movements and Mortality of Peregrine Falcons Banded in Greenland, 1972–97

    Open Access•William G Mattox, Marco Restani•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2014

In 1972 we initiated a long-term study of Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus in West Greenland to evaluate population status and describe general breeding ecology. The study area encompassed approximately 6050 km2, spanning the area from the edge of the inland ice cap westward to the coast. From 1972 to 1997, we banded 1896 peregrines (1771 nestlings, 125 adults). Encounters of banded peregrines (n = 114) outside the study area occurred at locati…

  • Organochlorine Compounds in the Plasma of Peregrine Falcons and Gyrfalcons Nesting in Greenland

    Open Access•Walter M Jarman, Stephanie A Burns et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1994

Levels of organochlorine compounds in the blood plasma of after-second-year female peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were determined from samples collected from southern Greenland in 1985 and western Greenland from 1983 to 1989, and from adult and nestling gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) from western Greenland in 1989 and 1990. Samples were taken during nesting. Levels of p,p'-DDE(DDE) in peregrine plasma were 140 μg/kg wet weight geometric mean…

  • West Greenland Peregrine Falcon Survey, 1978

    Open Access•William G Mattox, William R Heinrich et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1980

This brief report describes results of a survey project which has been banding West Greenland peregrines annually since 1972. Statistics on number of eyries, sex ratios, and number of young hatched per eyrie are given

  • The History of Greenland

    Open Access•William G Mattox•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1975

The first volume of Gad's History of Greenland covered the period from earliest archaeological records to 1700, at the dawn of Danish-Norwegian civilization (reviewed

  • Falcon Research in Greenland, 1973

    Open Access•William A Burnham, F Prescott Ward et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1974

During the summer of 1972 a research team initiated the first in-depth study of the peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) in West Greenland. Eight eyries (nests) of this endangered species were located in an inland sample area of 700 sq. mi. Detailed observations were taken of peregrine breeding behaviour at one eyrie. Seven of the eyries produced young, containing an average of 2.57 young per successful eyrie. This high reproductive rate indicat…

  • Pollutant and Shell Thickness Determinations of Peregrine Eggs from West Greenland

Open Access•Wayman Walker II, Wayman Walker et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1973

A preliminary survey of breeding peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) in West Greenland in 1972 indicated both a high nesting density (one pair per 100 square miles) and a high production rate (2.25 young per pair or 2.57 per pair with young). ... Peregrines in the eastern United States and southern Canada experienced an increasing incidence of reproductive failures throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, culminating in the disappearance of the bre…

  • Peregrine Falcon Survey, West Greenland, 1972

    Open Access•William G Mattox, Richard A Graham et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1972

The main purpose of the 1972 survey was to study a sample area of West Greenland to supply baseline data about peregrine falcons from which future surveys could determine the status and trends of this bird in Greenland. The main part of the study had as its goals: 1) to determine the density, distribution, and reproductive success of nesting peregrines in a sample area; 2) to band all peregrine nestlings found; 3) to determine prey species of the…

  • Bird-Banding in Greenland

    Open Access•William G Mattox•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1970

Reviews the ornithological studies and banding activities, the latter from 1890. Data are given on banding and recoveries in 1946-65 for 44 species cited by their English, Latin, Danish and Greenlandic names. The total number of birds banded in 1945-68 is >116,000. Author comments on human predation, the economic importance of birds to the natives, and on the system of paid banding by local population as fostering Greenlanders' interest in huntin…
