Colonial threads to made in China
Beyond rebranding from international to global? Lessons from geographies of global health for global development
With the potential for a major geographic shift from international to global development as paradigm for development studies and practice, this paper seeks to draw lessons from the closely related field of health as to what a shift from “international” to “global” may involve. In both fields, an earlier “international” framing emerges from a state‐dominated system which, although it superseded prior colonial origins, is outdated vis‐à‐vis an abil…

Towards a new paradigm of global development? Beyond the limits of international development
An international development framing is increasingly ill-fitting to a 21st century characterized by interconnected globalized capitalism, the challenge of sustainable development, as well as the blurring of North-South boundaries. While the term global development is increasingly employed, and appears more suited, it is used with different implicit meanings and is often conflated with international development. This article explores the potential…
From International to Global Development
Recent claims of 21st century global convergence and the 'rise of the South' suggest a profound and ongoing redrawing of the global map of development and inequality. This article synthesizes shifting geographies of development across economic, social and environmental dimensions, and considers their implications for the 'where' of development. Some convergence in aggregate development indicators for the global North and South during this century…

Global value chains and the rise of the Global South
A growing body of research points to the 'Rise of the South' and the growth of South-South trade. In this article, we consider the implications of the shifting dynamics of global trade and the greater prominence of Southern actors for the conceptualization of global value chains (GVCs) and global production networks (GPNs). We use trade data analysis to explore the changing geography of global trade and to highlight the emergence of more polycent…
South-North and South-South production networks
We know less about the structures and processes associated with South-South production networks than about those with a South-North orientation. Using an inductive approach, in this article we explore these differences by analysing the everyday practices that Indian pharmaceutical firms employ to meet production and quality standards, access markets and innovate. We use extensive primary interview evidence to demonstrate that Indian pharmaceutica…
Globalisation, uneven development and the North–South ‘big switch’
An apparent ‘big switch’ in attitudes towards and discourse over economic globalisation has occurred since the turn of the Millennium. Economic globalisation was formerly widely identified as being orchestrated in the interests of the global North. Sceptics, mostly left-leaning, expressed particular concern for its impacts in the global South. However, a recent backlash against globalisation has emerged within the global North from the political …
Beyond facilitator? State roles in global value chains and global production networks
Designed to break with state-centric approaches to understanding economic development, global commodity chain, global value chain (GVC), and global production network (GPN) analyses have deepened our understanding of the corporate governance of global lead firms and associated development outcomes in an era of globalisation. Although this research field is recognised to have provided considerable insight into private governance, a rapidly emergin…
Pharmaceuticals and the Global South
Although the pharmaceutical industry does not usually feature prominently in overviews of research on development, the sector has considerable significance for both health and economic development. This article reviews research on the pharmaceutical industry in the global South, identifying some broader themes that echo with prominent debates in the wider realm of development studies. In research in the 1970s and early 1980s, the pharmaceutical i…
Responding to the rising power “threat”
Purpose – This paper aims to explore how established multinational enterprises (MNEs) have responded to the perceived threat from rising power firms by seeking to alter the intellectual property institutional environment in key emerging economies. Design/methodology/approach – The key place of emerging economies in the efforts of established MNEs to seek patent law change is discussed. Two case studies review developments related to pharmaceutica…
A New Economic Geography of Trade and Development? Governing South–South Trade, Value Chains and Production Networks
While South–South development cooperation has “win–-win” aims, it is unclear the extent to which its horizontal, mutually beneficial objectives translate into “South–South” trade and move beyond the asymmetrical nature of North–South trade. Global value chain and global production network research can make progress into an understanding of the dynamics of these emerging trade patterns. To date, however, such research has largely focused on the de…
Postgraduate encounters with sub‐disciplinary divides
The identification of, and advocacy for bridging, a divide between economic and development geography has been a focus of considerable recent attention. Yet the practical challenges and opportunities involved in crossing sub‐disciplinary boundaries, particularly at postgraduate level, are rarely examined. The processes which together shape various stages of postgraduate training and research are reflected on here. Through addressing approaches to…
The Future of South-South Economic RelationsEdited by AdilNajam and RachelThrasherNew York
A historical reconstruction of an Alexandrium catenella cyst record from Sequim Bay, Washington and its relation to climate variability
Strategic decoupling, recoupling and global production networks
Contemporary debates on economic globalization have emphasized the development opportunities for the Global South through local firms becoming integrated into the global commodity chains (GCCs), value chains (GVCs) and production networks (GPNs) governed by leading multinational corporations. With increasing attention to the negative sides of integration, an emergent issue is the role of disengagement from, and operation outside of, the GPNs of l…
The Impact of Patents on Innovation, Technology Transfer and Health
The debate surrounding the World Trade Organization's Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) Agreement indicates that patents matter for development. Yet literature on the geography of knowledge transfer shows that knowledge is spatially sticky, suggesting that the impact of patents can be exaggerated. Using interview evidence, this paper explores how Indian pharmaceutical firms have responded to changes in patent law, incl…
India's new economic policy
This edited volume provides a welcome critical analysis of the impact of India's economic reforms from 1991 onwards. While acknowledging that economic growth rates have been high since the adoption
Species Composition and Abundance of Zooplankton in the Nearshore Beaufort Sea in Winter-Spring
Zooplankton samples collected in winter-spring 1978-79 and in spring 1980 from under the sea ice at two sites near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, were analyzed for species composition and abundance. Sixty-eight categories, including 48 species and 20 other categories where identification was made to genus or other higher taxonomic rank, were identified. Calanoid copepods were dominant under the ice. As spring progressed, however, other organisms, including…
Relative Contributions of Ice Algae, Phytoplankton, and Benthic Microalgae to Primary Production in Nearshore Regions of the Beaufort Sea
Phytoplankton, ice algae, and benthic microalgae are the three sources of primary production in the western Beaufort Sea in winter and spring. Phytoplankton levels in winter are low with chlorophyll a levels near the limit of detection. Microflagellates are the most abundant organisms present in the water column along with a few diatoms. Low chlorophyll a, standing stock, and primary productivity continue into June when the ice breaks up. Cells a…
