The Interaction Between Alcohol Misuse and Belongingness on Suicidal Ideation Among Military Personnel
Previous research suggests a high prevalence of suicidal ideation among military personnel. Suicidal ideation is associated with suicide attempts and death. This study focused on the association between belongingness-a component of the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide-and alcohol misuse on suicidal ideation among the different categories of military branch and military service status. Using the Military Suicide Research Consortium Co…
An Oral Health Promotion Strategy for Persons With Intellectual and Developmental Disability
Findings demonstrate that skills-based, experiential training with coaching can be effective in enhancing skill sets and increasing behaviors about oral health among DSP. In addition, results showed that the strategy used can improve oral health outcomes for residents. However, given that there were only improved outcomes in residents' lower anterior sextant, more research is needed to determine how to adequately assess and improve resident outco…
A Group Randomized Controlled Trial of Relationships Under Construction Sexual Risk Avoidance Education
BACKGROUND: We analyzed data from a study to evaluate the effectiveness of the Relationships Under Construction (RUC) sexual risk avoidance education program promoting positive youth development and healthy relationships. METHODS: Twelve schools in the Midwestern region of the United States randomized to the intervention implemented RUC in health or science classes, while control schools collected study measures and implemented the standard curri…
Changes in the Patterns and Characteristics of Youth ENDS Use over Time
Research on youth use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has explored the correlates of initiation and use; however, little is known about the factors that predict continued youth use of ENDS. We used an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) burst design to explore both daily variability within adolescents over a two-week observation period and variability over time two years later (2018 and 2020). The contribution of device character…
Socio-temporal contextual and community factors associated with daily exclusive ENDS use and dual use with tobacco cigarettes among adolescent vapers
Results showed that exposure to peers and adults vaping and exposure to ENDS marketing were associated with same day dual use behaviors. And, that adolescents who dual used were motivated to use ENDS because they were easy to conceal. Findings support stricter regulation of ENDS marketing and for smoke-free air laws that include ENDS. In addition, these findings support prioritizing family- and school-based prevention programming that effectively…
Intimate Partner Violence and Structural Violence in the Lives of Incarcerated Women
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a common feature in the lives of incarcerated women returning to rural communities, enhancing their risk of mental ill-health, substance use, and recidivism. Women's experiences of IPV intersect with challenges across multiple social-ecological levels, including risky or criminalizing interpersonal relationships, geographic isolation, and persistent gender, racial, and economic inequities. We conducted quantitat…
Peer-Led Training to Reduce Alcohol Misuse and Related Harm among Greek-Affiliated Students
Background High-risk alcohol use on college campuses is a significant public health concern, especially among students in fraternities and sororities. Alcohol harm-reduction programs that include protective behavioral strategies (PBSs) provide a promising approach to curb drinking among students, yet results have been inconsistent among high-risk drinkers. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a harm-reduction, peer-led training program called “Voic…

If momma ain't happy with the mentoring relationship, ain't nobody happy with the mentoring relationship
Much evidence exists on whether an individual's perception of a match relationship impacts match strength and length, but relatively less is known about whether parental perceptions of the match (i.e., whether the match is meeting their goals) impacts the length and strength of mentoring relationships. These relationships were examined in a sample of 350 newly formed youth–mentor matches who completed multiple measures of match strength and satis…
Evaluation of an evidence-based intervention implemented with African-American women to prevent substance abuse, strengthen relationship skills and reduce risk for HIV/Aids
African-American females in the U.S. are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, and a large majority of new infections in this population are attributed to heterosexual contact. Risk factors include substance abuse, lack of knowledge about male partners' possible HIV infection risk, incarceration, disruptions of social networks, and intimate partner violence. This study assessed the effects of a comprehensive, evidence-based prevention interven…
Gender differences in Afghan drug-abuse treatment
Results provide preliminary evidence for potential treatment success of women-tailored DAT programming in Afghanistan. Results also indicate that DAT appears to be successful among Afghan men; however, lower positive outcomes for men when compared to women suggest that more efforts should focus on tailoring DAT programming to the specific needs of Afghan men as well. Study limitations are addressed, and important policy implications are discussed
Correlates of condom use with “main” and “concurrent” sex partners among urban youth in post-conflict Liberia
This paper presents baseline findings on correlates of condom use with “main” and “concurrent” sex partners among Liberian youth (ages 15–17) in Liberia. With Liberia having recently emerged from fourteen years of civil war, this paper is one of only a few published reports of the sexual risk behaviors of urban youth residing in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital. The analysis was limited to highly, sexually active Liberian adolescents who reported havi…

Law Enforcement Training in Southeast Asia

Analyses of data from a sample of 214 participants across four training cohorts showed that favorable reaction was adequate to very adequate, their knowledge increased significantly, commitment to knowledge use remained moderately high, and their use of the training positively influenced individual…
Social allergies in romantic relationships
A social allergy is a reaction of hypersensitive annoyance or disgust to a repeated behavior. Two studies were conducted on the social allergen categories of uncouth habits, inconsiderate acts, intrusive behaviors, and norm violations. Study 1 focused on hypothetical male and female partner behaviors at 2 and 12 months in a dating relationship. Study 2 obtained reports of social allergens performed by the individual and partner in dating couples,…
