  • Leisure in the new social paradigm

    Donald G Reid•ARTICLE•Leisure/Loisir•2026

Democracy as an operating framework is in a liminal state given that its present configuration cannot satisfactorily address the existential threats that confront it. A liminal state occurs when the social system increases in complexity through time until it reaches a state of chaos, and it becomes clear that the present orthodoxy is not capable of addressing the major issues that confront it. Given this liminal state, leisure science has an oppo…

  • Social Progress and the Authoritarian Challenge to Democracy

    Donald G Reid•BOOK•Social Progress and the…•2022

Social Progress and the Authoritarian Challenge to Democracy examines the authoritarian challenge to present-day democracy through a framing of social progress theory and the idea of the social contract. Building on the author’s previous work, this book discusses whether social progress is linear and on a continual upward trajectory to human betterment, or if there are peaks and troughs along the way. More importantly, it questions that, if socia…

  • Implications of Zoonoses From Hunting and Use of Wildlife in North American Arctic and Boreal Biomes

Open Access•Lucy Keatts, Martin D Robards et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has re-focused attention on mechanisms that lead to zoonotic disease spillover and spread. Commercial wildlife trade, and associated markets, are recognized mechanisms for zoonotic disease emergence, resulting in a growing global conversation around reducing human disease risks from spillover associated with hunting, trade, and consumption of wild animals. These discussions are especially relevant to people who rely on harve…

  • Documenting lemming population change in the Arctic

    Open Access•Dorothee Ehrich, Niels M Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 39

Lemmings are a key component of tundra food webs and changes in their dynamics can affect the whole ecosystem. We present a comprehensive overview of lemming monitoring and research activities, and assess recent trends in lemming abundance across the circumpolar Arctic. Since 2000, lemmings have been monitored at 49 sites of which 38 are still active. The sites were not evenly distributed with notably Russia and high Arctic Canada underrepresente…

  • Evaluation of a Technique to Trap Lemmings Under the Snow

Open Access•Frédéric Bilodeau, Alice J Kenney et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2013

We attempted to live trap lemmings under the snow in their preferred winter habitat at two sites in the Canadian Arctic using chimney-like boxes. Lemmings used the boxes during winter, but we had very low trapping success in April and May. During spring trapping, in contrast to most of the winter, subnivean temperatures became colder than ambient air temperatures. We hypothesize that our low success in spring resulted from lemmings’ leaving the d…

  • Rural Tourism Development

E Wanda George, Heather Mair et al.•BOOK•Rural tourism development•2009

Rural tourism represents a merging of perhaps two of the most influential yet contradictory features of modern life. Not only are the forces of economic, social, cultural, environmental and political change working to redefine rural spaces the world over, but broad global transformations in consumption and transportation patterns are reshaping leisure behaviour and travel. For those concerned with both the nature of change in rural areas and tour…

  • The Power of Tourism

    E Wanda George, Donald G Reid•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism and Cultural…•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 11

The commodification of culture for tourism can result in fundamentally changing a community's structure. Focusing on one rural Atlantic Canadian community, this article examines the transformation of longstanding stable forms of human and social capital that have bonded a local community over two centuries, and in so doing helped to ensure sustainability. Transformations induced by tourism development may dramatically transform such cultures. To …

    Donald G Reid, Heather Mair et al.•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 2

This paper examines rural tourism development at the community level. Research was undertaken in four rural communities in Ontario, Canada which identified outcomes and impacts of unplanned tourism development. The research indicated that critical problems arise as development increases. Frustration sets in after years of the community's inability to solve the issues. Members of the research communities identified the development of a tourism pla…

  • The Globalization of the Economy and Potential New Roles for Work and Leisure

    Donald G Reid, Roger C Mannell•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•1994•Cited by: 2•References: 2

It is generally acknowledged that the industrial world is undergoing a dramatic restructuring of its economy. There is great pressure on all industrial economies to reduce barriers to trade and flows of capital, creating a more global economic system. The result of this change is heightened competition among countries and businesses, leading to reduced labour input in the manufacturing process, and focusing job creation on the knowledge industrie…

    Donald G Reid•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•1988•Cited by: 1

The results of an empirical study conducted in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario examining the leisure needs of the unemployed and how those needs changed from pre- to post-unemployment conditions are the focus of this paper. Ways in which the community leisure service delivery system cam respond to change, and identification of barriers denying need fulfillment and prohibiting access to the unemployed will be examined. The paper outlines some of the imp…

Recently there has been great interest in the re-organization of work and its effects on labor relations during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, particularly in the metal-working and machine industries. Studies of this issue have generally been framed in terms of technological advances in the steel industry in the second half of the nineteenth century, the exigencies of the market during a…
