Late Dorset dwellings from two sites on Little Cornwallis Island (Nunavut) illustrate the diversity of architectural forms from this period. Ten architectural features are described. Variations in size, number of hearths, and c…

  • Qitdlarssuaq: The Story of a Polar Migration, by Guy Mary-Rousselière

    Open Access•James W Helmer•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1992

The coverage begins with the northwestern region, where Clark devotes three chapters (1-3) to discussing the archaeological evidence for the history of this subregion. The depth of treatment decreases, however, as he proceeds eastward, with two chapters (5-6) devoted to the north-central subarea and only one (7) to the third. This emphasis reflects, I suspect, Clark's own interest and expertise, not to mention the availability of appropriate source…

  • Prehistoric Site Location Strategies in the North Devon Lowlands, High Arctic Canada

    James W Helmer•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 18

The settlement pattern data from 184 archaeological components discovered on the NE coast of Devon Island, Northwest Territories, during the 1982 through 1987 field seasons are summarized and locational, compositional, and chronological observations made on these components are tabulated and evaluated quantitatively. Significant patterns in site distributions through both space and time are demonstrated. The relationship between the site location…

Observed variations in the intensity of occupation in the study area and major shifts in the extra-regional cultural affiliations of these six occupational episodes are discussed in…

  • The Holocene Paleoecology of Jenny Lake Area, Southwest Yukon, and Its Implications for Prehistory

    Open Access•Glenn S L Stuart, James W Helmer et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1989

The pollen stratigraphy of a core extracted from Jenny Lake, southwest Yukon, in 1984 has marked archaeological significance. Five palynological zones are identified as follows: Zone JL1, the oldest (ca. 12,500-9,500 B.P.), is a Betula shrub tundra assemblage; Zone JL2 (ca. 9,500-8,500 B.P.) an Alnus shrub tundra; Zone JL3 (ca. 8,500-4,500 B.P.) a Picea forest; Zone JL4 (ca. 4,500-2,000 B.P.) a Picea-Alnus woodland; and JL5 (ca. 2,000 B.P.-presen…
