  • The Fate of Chemically Dispersed and Untreated Crude Oil in Arctic Benthic Biota

Open Access•B Humphrey, Paul D Boehm et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

Subtidal benthic biota were monitored for petroleum hydrocarbons following two experimental oil spills at Cape Hatt, N.W.T., Canada. In one spill oil was chemically dispersed into the water column, and in the other oil was released onto the water surface and allowed to strand on the shoreline. In addition to baseline samples, samples were collected immediately after the oil releases, two to three weeks after and one and two years after. Initial o…

  • The Fate of Oil in the Water Column Following Experimental Oil Spills in the Arctic Marine Nearshore

    Open Access•B Humphrey, D R Green et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

Petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in the water column were monitored after a release of crude oil onto the water surface and a subsurface release of chemically dispersed oil. During the surface release, petroleum hydrocarbons did not disperse into the water column deeper than 1 m. The highest concentrations observed under the slick were less than 2 mg/l. The chemically dispersed oil released resulted in concentrations over 50 mg/l in the Bay 9…

  • Comparative Fate of Chemically Dispersed and Beached Crude Oil in Subtidal Sediments of the Arctic Nearshore

    Open Access•Paul D Boehm, Margarete S Steinhauer et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

A three-year investigation was conducted to examine the incorporation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) into subtidal sediments following experimental releases of oil during the Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) Project experiments. The concentrations of PHC were determined by synchronous scanning UV/Fluorescence spectroscopy, while the composition of residual saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons was determined by gas chromatography and gas chromatogra…
