  • Frostbites in circumpolar areas

    Open Access•Tiina M Ikäheimo, Juhani Hassi•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2011

Circumpolar areas are associated with prolonged cold exposure where wind, precipitation, and darkness further aggravate the environmental conditions and the associated risks. Despite the climate warming, cold climatic conditions will prevail in circumpolar areas and contribute to adverse health effects. Frostbite is a freezing injury where localized damage affects the skin and other tissues. It occurs during occupational or leisure-time activitie…

  • Accident and risk evaluation on Finnish Antarctic expeditions

    Open Access•Anneli Pekkarinen, Sinikka Soini et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1992•References: 2

The first Finnish expedition to the Antarctic, made in 1988–89, included five men. The second, a year later, included 57, mostly researchers. Accidents that occurred during the expeditions were recorded by a medical doctor and their incidence rate and severity were estimated. The few accidents that occurred did not cause disability. Some 20 risk factors were evaluated from two questionnaires filled out during the journeys to and from Antarctica, …

  • Alcohol consumption among male reindeer herders of lappish and finnish origin

    Open Access•Kari Poikolainen, Simo Näyhä et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 3

  • Human Physiological Adaptations to the Arctic Climate

    Open Access•Juhani Leppäluoto, Juhani Hassi•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1991

This review deals with thermal, metabolic and hormonal responses of various human populations to natural or experimental acclimation. Modern people react to cold with shivering, increased metabolism and cutaneous vasoconstriction (metabolic response). Native people, such as Australian aborigines, Eskimos, arctic Indians and Lapps, who were regularly exposed to cold in their natural habitat, have been reported to exhibit less pronounced shivering …
