  • Persons, Animals, and Machines

    Open Access•Matthew Elton•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 6

What is the relationship between persons, animals, and machines? The author first presents a form of argument against any attempt to reduce biology to mechanism. He then runs a parallel argument for psychology and biology. But although he tries to resist reduction, he insists that to bring into being a person or an animal requires no more than the construction of a certain sort of machine, or causal engine, such that certain normative standards c…

  • The Role of the Affinity Argument in the Phaedo

    Matthew Elton•ARTICLE•Phronesis•1997

The affinity argument (78b4-84b8) stands out in the «Phaedo» as the weakest of all Socrates' arguments for the immortality of soul. It is clear from the dialogue that Plato has gave doubts about the…

  • Artificial Creativity: Enculturing Computers

To this end he outlines an account of creativity and then goes on to argue that computer systems can meet the necessary criteria. The paper concludes with some remarks about what the field of artificial creativity can contribute to our understanding of machines and ourselves. What is artificial creativity? It is the art of constructing machines that are cre…
