Antarctic ecosystem responses following ice‐shelf collapse and iceberg calving
The calving of A‐68, the 5,800‐km 2 , 1‐trillion‐ton iceberg shed from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in July 2017, is one of over 10 significant ice‐shelf loss events in the past few decades resulting from rapid warming around the Antarctic Peninsula. The rapid thinning, retreat, and collapse of ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula are harbingers of warming effects around the entire continent. Ice shelves cover more than 1.5 million km 2 and fringe…
Prospects for the sustainability of social-ecological systems (SES) on the Mongolian plateau
The Mongolian Plateau hosts two different governments: the Mongolian People's Republic and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, a provincial-level government of the People's Republic of China. The divergence between these governments has widened in the past century, mostly due to a series of institutional changes that generated different socioeconomic and demographic trajectories. Due to its high latitude and altitude, the Plateau has been highl…
Spillover systems in a telecoupled Anthropocene
Even at the uttermost ends of the Earth
Raya Rey, A. N., J. C. Pizarro, C. B. Anderson, and F. Huettmann. 2017. Even at the uttermost ends of the Earth: how seabirds telecouple the Beagle Channel with regional and global processes that affect environmental conservation and social-ecological sustainability. Long‐Term Population Survey of the Sulawesi Black Macaques ( Macaca nigra ) at Tangkoko Nature Reserve, North Sulawesi, Indonesia
The Sulawesi black macaque ( Macaca nigra ) population at Tangkoko Nature Reserve in North Sulawesi, Indonesia has been the focus of periodic study for over 30 years. The population has shown considerable decline during much of that time. Here we present the results of a long‐term population survey of the Tangkoko M. nigra , conducted over the past decade, to provide updated information and on‐going assessment of the population. Line‐transect sam…
Distribution and Community Characteristics of Staging Shorebirds on the Northern Coast of Alaska
Avian studies conducted in the 1970s on Alaska’s Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) indicated that coastal littoral habitats are important to Arctic-breeding shorebirds for staging prior to fall migration. However, relatively little recent, broad-scale, or quantitative information exists on shorebird use of staging areas in this region. To locate possible shorebird concentration areas in the littoral zone of the ACP, we conducted aerial surveys from the …
Novel methods improve prediction of species’ distributions from occurrence data
Prediction of species’ distributions is central to diverse applications in ecology, evolution and conservation science. There is increasing electronic access to vast sets of occurrence records in museums and herbaria, yet little effective guidance on how best to use this information in the context of numerous approaches for modelling distributions. To meet this need, we compared 16 modelling methods over 226 species from 6 regions of the world, c…
